personally, i doubt that the power of any music can override the power of a corporation. but
i'm willing to be proven wrong.
also interestingly enough, peewee is the
lone voice against this.
who would have been the most likely recipient of the award?

Herb has a tremendous point.
Also the point Chris gave about the Strength of the Corporation involved in it.
The Actual MUSIC is Waaaaaaaaaay down the list of priorities in making a "music" hit today.
It is about so many more things than the actual song/music.

I think a lot of people are nostalgic for the older country music, which relied heavily on steel guitar. But that's not where it's at for a majority of country music lovers today. I think most of them want to distance themselves from that sound. It's a social thing. The average young listener/consumer doesn't want to listen to that old stuff unless it's Hank Williams or Patsy Cline.
Some artists still use steel guitar, but I am mostly just guessing, since I don't listen to the music. I love to listen to classic and obscure, but it drives the people around me nuts.
It's similar to the evolution of blues in one sense--many young black listeners wanted to distance themselves from that old sound, because it was a reminder of really bad times. But then the music became popular with a large audience in the 60s via the folk scene and later Rock and Roll.
