Building a new cabinet for reno 400 since removing horns. Building with pine. Should i go open or closed back? Using black widow or eminence eps15

One of my DVDs on how to play E9 steel says closed back amps do not work well for steel.
I can see that because as a guitar player you would use something like a Marshall 1960 closed back cab to get that bottom push. I can see that messing with the articulation of a steel ..... But I am NOT a steel player. |

A removable back ...
I have a removable back I put on my Nashville 1000...I started a gig one night and thought whats the matter with my amp..I looked over and saw I forgot to put the back on after getting the wires out....Just Sayin |

Well,,, of course it depends on the sound you want to hear. I have always preferred open backs, and my Dr. Z Surgical Steel will be open backed. I've listened to both available cabs, both open and closed, and I far prefer the open back. But Doc provides the panel, so you can go either way, and decide for yourself.

I have backs that velcro on for outside gigs to help project my sound..off for inside where they are usually against a wall for rear projection...Larry

The best tone I've ever gotten is from one of each. I have been able to get a phenomenal sound from an amp into a closed-back ported 15 from either a Session 400 or a Super Twin Reverb. It just needs different EQ than the open back, but just a little bit more highs.

cool thanks guys. I think I will go with a removable closed back design. That sounds good to me. I am really impressed with this little reno amp. even with the horn installed it sounds great. one thing I'm having a problem with is when trying to adjust the mid pot the onboard compression light comes on and I get a very scary sounding feedback/hum from the amp. Does anybody know what that could be? Thanks

| Dirty or bad pot. Try rotating it very quickly from 0-10 about 20 or 30 times times. |

| Some where several years ago I seen a set of plans for amp. case and speaker boxes. Designed by a Acoustic Engineer that had holes drilled in the front corners below the speaker, With tubes in them that ran nearly to the back of the case. Part of the instructions was move these tubes to get the sound right then cut and mount them in the case. A speaker has to have open movable air behind it so the cone can vibrate freely or it will muffle and distort the sound. It is where you set the speaker or amp. with the band whether open or closed back will work best, And be asked to play the next gig. |

I have and use a Marshall 1936 2X12, closed back, for armpit guitar at times.
It is beamy. Offensively so. So much that you have to bounce it off the ceiling or turn it around and mic it.
Open back is not as beamy. |

With a closed back cab, it can be difficult for other band members to hear you unless everyone has their own monitor mixes (because closed back cabs are so directional). And even with individual mixes, most singers would rather hear you from a far than clog up their monitor with a little of everything.
I use a ported, closed back Standel Imperial 1x15" amp and cab when I play with Jamie Lee Thurston. The stages always have stacks of subs that are closer to me than I like. They create waves of sub frequencies.. and the closed back cab helps direct the sound of the steel right in my ear rather than having to crank up a monitor so much or haul a second steel amp just for monitoring. |
