I have a lower watt amp I like to play through from time to time. Is amplifier clipping on low notes the amplifier itself or is it a speaker issue. If I were to put a higher rated speaker would it still clip? I'm pretty sure this is amplifier related just from pushing it too hard. |

That can be hard to narrow down but you might zero in on it a bit by playing with your volume pedal and trying to determine if you can trim back the level at the input just a little and change the overdriving characteristics. It could be that an attenuated input can keep the preamp clean. Or not. What amp? Might help to know. |

Tweed bassman. I love my high powered twins but sometimes it's fun to play one of these |

Note it has a baffle with a 15. It's running a jensen p15n reissue. Seems like a 50 watt speaker in a 45 watt amp. It's plenty loud but obviously lacks the lows from a twin. |

I've done pretty loud & warmly clean with a tweed Bassman. Hard to say. |

If I were messing with an amp like this, trying to get it cleaner than it is, I'd first see if it's got a 'low' input (I forget if these do). Then I'd see if it's got a 12AX7 in V1. If so, I'd try a 12AT7. These are obviously simpler & cheaper than getting into speaker swapping. |

The low input that a good idea. It had a 12 AX7 in V1 and I've got an AY7 in it now but I'm thinking about a 5751. Power Tubes are 6L6 but I have a comperable NOS 5881's as well. Speaker swapping doesn't seem like a viable method. I have other Jensens that get bottom. |

Has the output transformer been changed to accommodate the single 15 speaker?
If not, you are losing power due to an impedance mismatch. |
