In case any of you missed it, there is a wonderful hour-long video in the "Steel On The Web" section of Buddy Emmons live in concert with Hogan's Heroes and Albert Lee in the UK in 1988.
Be prepared to fall in love with Buddy's playing all over again:

Gerry Hogan should take the full credit for putting this show together, bringing Buddy over to the UK, getting the band in place and organising the whole weekend. Gerry is a dear friend to many UK steel aficionados, and those shows that he put on in Newbury are now legendary. He is also a great steel and guitar player, as is evident from his work on the Les Paul in these clips. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. great video, great band, I think those guys were in Zagreb with Gerry, and Albert, but they had Bruce Bouton with them instead Buddy ... one thing that is killing me, is what is that thing Buddy is sitting on? it looks like a trash can lol ... there is no way he could have been comfortable playing while sitting on that ... also noticed on the last song Buddy was tearing it up on C6 without using any pedals or knee levers...I guess he didn't need 10 knee levers, and 10 pedals to play as awesome as he did...lol _________________ www.steelguitarsonline.com |

I do believe that he's sitting on Gerry's steel seat (if memory serves me correctly). It was something of a home-made affair. ![Whoa!](images/smiles/icon_omg.gif) _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

I wonder if that was also a borrowed steel for Buddy? He seems to check his feet every now and then, and could explain why he didn't use the pedals as much.

thanks Roger, then it should be fine, I am pretty sure Gerry knew what he was doing when he made the seat... _________________ www.steelguitarsonline.com |

Thanks, Ken!
Damir: the white wooden box which Buddy was sitting on was my steel seat for many years. Buddy saw it, tried it and said it was exactly right for him! The box was kindly made (at the correct height for me, though, unknown to me), by Alan Douglass, a fine gentleman and one-time ZB craftsman in Phoenix. He gave it to me in St Louis one year - it was a complete surprise! Prior to that, I had used various kitchen stools, or otherwise used any seating which was handy at a gig - invariably padded out, to the correct height, by cushions and folded amp covers. (You've all done that in the past, I'm sure!). I had never owned a proper steel pack-a-seat! Yes, probably like so many pieces of equipment in the steel guitar world, it could have been described, perhaps unkindly, as "something of a homemade affair"!
I was so privileged to host Buddy Emmons at my Festival twice - the first time in 1985, thanks to Scotty. The band (with which Roger worked in the UK for a long time) were all very experienced players, but somehow, Buddy picked everyone up by the scruff of the neck and carried all along with him! He stretched us all, for the good! It was very exhilarating to be part of it!
Damir: yes, it was the same band which played with Albert Lee in Zagreb in 1989.
Joe: the EMCI Buddy played was his own. He flew it over with him on the plane! To make his checked baggage weigh less, he took the legs out of the steel case and packed them in his carry-on luggage!
It all seems like yesterday, but it was almost 30 years ago! |

Ooops! Sorry, Gerry - I bet you told me the story behind the seat but it must have slipped my mind!
Far from being 'something of a home-made affair' it turns out that it was hand-crafted (there - that sounds better ) and a gift as well!
My apologies to Alan Douglass.
Thanks for corroborating my various shots in the dark.
A brief note about Buddy 'checking his feet'....
I spoke with him at an Everly Brothers' date in Biloxi in 2000 at their sound-check and one of my questions related to what he had his fourth pedal doing on his C neck. Expecting a quick response I was somewhat surprised to see him switch the necks over then grope for pedal 4 - he strummed his guitar then looked up at me and said: "Ah! I'm raising the As to B..."
I was taken aback that he didn't know without checking! I presume he'd been trying different things and just couldn't recall how the steel (Black Bart, by the way) was set up at that moment. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!
