Howdy Folks;
Can someone point me to the best place to buy E9th Ext strings sets? I've checked the places I used to buy my 10 string sets from and they don't carry the ext 12 string sets.

Live Steel Strings carries a set. Or they don't charge extra for custom sets. Get your E9th set of choice and add a 0.046 and a 0.054

Both Cobra coil and Live steel took my gauges and made me custom sets..they kept my info so when I reorder I'm in their files...Larry

The reason I was asking is because I have a new to me 12 string ext E9th guitar. I've put a good amount of practice time on it with no issues with the strings that were on it when I got it. I ordered some strings from Tom B and just put a set on yesterday and the .011 3rd keeps breaking at the tuning machine end. I pulled the tuning machine off and cleaned up the hole in the shaft to make sure there were no burrs, but that hasn't helped so I thought I would try some different strings.
I've played banjo for over 40 years so I can assure you there isn't any rookie error, like trying to tune the string an octave too high, going on.

Try giving it LOTS of wraps, getting the takeoff point away from the hole?

| I agree with Lane. Wind enough wraps on the 3rd string to get off the hole in the tuner. I quick changed a broken 3rd string on stage. Just put a couple turns to get back to playing the gig. The next day practicing the 3rd broke again, Still stretchy, Wrapped over my left hand with bar and the string end buried to the bone in my right ring finger. Every time I change a 3rd string I remember that BoBo. |

| Thanks guys. These are breaking before they even reach pitch, or within the first few times you get on the pedal. Hopefully the extra turns to get off the hole in the tuner shaft work. I've been out at a conference the last couple of days but I'll be home tomorrow, so I'll give it a go and see what happens. |

Thanks Bob. I have some Livewires on the way, which are what was on it before, and I preferred the tone of the wound strings over what's on the guitar know, but I think I'll be trying some different sets to see what I like, so I'll get around to the ghs's as well. |

Hey Gino, when ordering string sets for extended E9 always make sure that you tell them it's not for a Universal tuning. I've ordered from two different shops, one in Nashville and one in Virginia and both places sent me Universal sets. What I do anymore is just get a regular 10 string set and then buy a .046 and a .056 string for the low G# and E....JH in Va.

Thanks Jerry. The sets I have are definitely ext e9th sets. I ordered some live wires, so we'll see how they do when I get them. |

Ooops, got the name of the strings wrong, have Live Steel strings coming. I've been sick as a dog, and drugged up on Theraflue to get through the conference. At least that's my excuse, but I'm sticking to it.
Lane, I think you nailed it, seems to be holding now that I put a bunch of wraps on it to get it off the hole. Thanks! |
