Second post

I have found a Pedal Steel Guitar that I want to purchase in Raleigh, NC, but I'm in California.
What is the best or safe procedure to do so I don't
get scammed?

He wants payment by PayPal. How do I make sure the guitar gets shipped to me without problems or damaged?

I am new to this internet purchasing/etc.

I should know but I don't!?

Thanks for all your help. Ed

I hate PayPal, but it is the safest way for you to buy something on there internet... if he is new to PayPal they wont release money to him until couple days after you get your guitar...

Edward what you do is you send them a Postal Money order or a Cashiers check from your bank. You go to the post office and mail it with a signed return recite. Then they should send you the Steel Guitar and you will have to pay the Shipping.Get his name address and phone number and call him.Do what Damir does he does it all the time go with Pay Pal and if you do not have pay pal he can tell you how to get it I do not know. Also let me know his name as I live 12 miles south west of Raleigh N.C. and I will tell you if I know him or not and if I do I can tell you if you can trust him or not. What does he have on the Steel Guitar forum that you want to buy.let me know I can help you. What Steel Guitar are you trying to buy on the forum. I can help you better than any one as I know just about all the Steel players here in N.C. and lots more.

I don't hate PayPal - it's as secure a way of sending or receiving money that I know. I've sold numerous items this way.

The advantages? I see the money in my account almost immediately so I don't need to 'clear cheques' or risk Money Orders. Sure, there's a fee involved but it's worth it in my view to speed up the transaction.

Having been in your shoes several times now for PSG's, I would offer a couple words of advise.

First off, if the seller isn't a known regular with a good reputation here on the forum, be doubly on guard for anything that doesn't seem right. I always insist on talking to the person on the phone. I think it gives you a much better shot at getting a sense of whether or not you can trust them.

Next step, ask for lots of hi res photos of all aspects of the guitar and case, as well as anything else included of any substance, look them over closely, and then talk through anything you see that you have questions about with the seller on the phone. I'm telling you to do this for two reasons, the obvious of course is knowing the real condition, the best you can anyway from a distance. The other reason, which is maybe more important, is that this is testing the seller. You get to see, before you give him any money, how accommodating he is, how well he listens to what you are asking him to do, and most importantly, if he does what he says he will. If he can't get the photos to you when he says he will, he probably won't get the guitar to you when, or how he says he will.

Ask questions about everything, don't assume something is right if they haven't said there is an issue. Ask about the condition of the case, is a rod and leg bag included, do the clutches on the legs all work correctly, are the legs standard height, ask how they plan to package the guitar for shipping, ask about everything. I also recommend you ask if the person is a regular player, or someone that was trying to learn and is now selling the guitar. The odds of getting a guitar that is correctly setup, with all changes timed and operating smoothly goes down significantly if you are buying from someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

Lastly, unless you are buying a guitar that is pretty new, was owned by one of the many very attentive players here on the forum known to keep there kit in top notch shape, or is just back from having a tuneup from a known reputable tech, expect to have some issues to sort out.

Paypal is the best way to pay them. If the seller doesn't ship the guitar, you'll have recourse through paypal.

Hope this helps

I've been buying & selling on the internet for 15 tears.

There are some good buys & there are some sales, you just don't make.

As far as Steel Guitars go, I've been a lucky man.

Ask all the questions you want to before you buy, all the questions after that are what they are... a waste.

Howsomever, you may be dealing with a quality gentleman & you'll be a happy camper like me.

Ask the question s, after you have written them down, checked them twice & make the call. Jot down the replies for future reference.

I trust anyone that has been on the FORUM for any length of time with multiple dealings. Maybe I'm lucky, but I have never had a problem with any forum member. If it isn't on the forum, I don't buy. Hope your deal works out for you.

Another option if you use UPS is their COD service. It costs $12.50, much cheaper than Paypal on a $2,000-$3,000 guitar. They won't deliver the package without a verifiable cashier's check from the recipient. This provides protection for both parties, as you don't pay for the guitar until you actually receive it, and the seller knows the guitar won't be delivered without payment. One downside is that it usually takes about ten days for the seller to receive the check that UPS has collected, but it all seems very secure. I've used this method several times as both buyer and seller.

You are lucky. I have had issues with a couple of Forum members, and not to my satisfaction.

Agree with all said; One added note...i would use my cell phone to skype or facetime the person, and have him slowly run the camera over the product, this way no glossy 'Photo shop' is added etc.

Paypal is the very safest way in my opinion and well worth it, i use it all the time and never had an issue.

There are 100's of reputable people on here to buy from, and i have never had an issue from a known long term member.

I would not touch craigslist from afar or other source, too risky!!!!

The only issue I could say I have had with a forum member has been what there description of what is in great condition or super clean, or whatever descriptors are used. Some people just have a different opinion of what the condition of something is, and something that is an issue to me, they may not even notice.

I bought three steel guitars off Craigs List in the last 5 years. They don't come on that often, but at least you can see what your buying and you don't have to worry about it being shipped and getting busted. Tenn.Lee

Edward: you're new here. Welcome.

If you're serious about this guitar, you've got quite an offer from Sam White. Maybe he could go look at the guitar.
Otherwise you're in a blind alley.

Did you find a Fender 2000? Are you a collector, or wanting something to play?
