Here's a live video of an original song, performed at the Musica in Akron as part of a songwriter showcase. It's neither dazzling nor flawless, but hopefully illustrates the utility of the instrument for the solo singer/songwriter. The focus here tends to be on instrumental music and that's perfectly natural, but it really is a great instrument for the solo performer.

Very nice. Thanks for the link. What tuning are you using for that song?

It's open D. Lo-Hi D A D F# A D. My favorite for solo accompaniment.

It's a magnetic soundhole pickup, specifically a DiMarzio DP136 Super Natural Plus. The guitar is a James Adams "Hawaiian". It came with a piezo under saddle pickup. The DiMarzio sounds soooo much better. I don't think under saddle pickups work very well for lap steels. Way too brittle. So now the preamp that Mr. Adams cut a hole in a gorgeous piece of maple to mount is nothing but a relic.
I had to modify the Dimarzio in order to get it to the proper string height. Kind of a clumsy job, but it works. One of these days, I'm going to do a cleaner install.
