These are decent guitars with a real setup by one of the masters. A new BC-1 cone, new #14 spider and expert setup should make this a very decent mid-priced instrument.

IMHO anyone considering a lower end import (Gretsch, Regal, etc.) should consider the difference in setups and spend a few more $ for this guitar.

Priced below a Goldtone.

Goldtone has crept up in price and this Recording King looks nice enough, particularly since it contains Paul's expert setup.

But I'm wondering...has something happened with the "supply line" of the entry level laminate Goldtone/Beard? A young guy was asking me about getting started on the instrument several months ago and at the time I was looking for him I saw the Goldtone/Beard in question was out of stock on Paul's site, and as of last night when visiting to check out the Recording King it's still out of stock. Even though the Goldtones have crept up in price the entry level model is only $103 more than the Paul set up Recording King. Without playing or even hearing the guitar and I'm already at $700 for the King I would try to to find the additional $103 and go for the Goldtone with the Paul setup - if it were actually available.

The Goldtone/Beard gets you into the ballpark of "the modern sound" which is what most newer players are looking for these days. Newbies on the instrument want to sound like the top contemporary players, they aren't usually hip to Josh and Brother Oswald. That comes later in their education.

The King does look nice, but the overall design seems to to borrow from the traditional Dobro blueprint. A lot of these import companies seem to miss the mark on this in thinking that everyone wants "traditional" like the budget version of vintage flattops from Martin which in some cases have never been topped in modern times, and newbies go for it ("traditional" must be better?) only to realize later that sound they hear in their head is more along the lines of Jerry, Rob Ickes, Mike Witcher, Andy Hall, Greg Booth, Gaven Largent, etc. on contemporary large body guitars.

It's a properly set up guitar targeted towards the beginner.

Let's not put the cart before the horse.

Goldtones have always been in/out of stock. It the nature of having contract factories in China.

You tell em' "build me 1,000". The shipping container clears customs with 650.

The nature of the beast.

I personally think this is a smart move. Nothing distracts/unmotivates a beginner more then a crappy instrument.

Lord knows there are plenty of crappy resos out there. Cool
