Greetings:

I've been jamming with my boss at work (great job!) on my weissenborn (open D or G tuning). He is a novice banjer player, mostly claw hammer, but he is trying to be adventurous. I have been at the Weiss about a year and have an old supro lap steel now.

We've been kicking around trad. stuff (I'll fly Away, a Jesse Winchester song, 3 chord stuff, etc.) and some jamming over one or two chords. He fancies bluegrass/new grass/jam band styles, but we are both all over the map, leaning more towards quirky vs.rigid stuff. We like how the banjo sounds with the slider.

Do any of you play with banjo players (in a duo or maybe trio)? If so, how have you handled material? Key choices? Arrangements? etc.

With a duo such as this, the only limitation is your own imagination. Bill Frisell and Danny Barnes gives you an idea of some places they've gone, although Frisell plays standard guitar rather than Weissenborn.

Play what you like, even if you don't think you can play it properly. Leave space for each other (playing in a duo is a great way to learn how to accompany another player). Don't be afraid to fail.
