Alright, I'm ready to take the plunge. After years of ignoring Hawaiian music, I'm in search of a really good album to get exposed to Island music. Any suggestions? |

Hi,
You might try "Made In Hawaii," Sma Kine CD1210, various artists. A good selection of tunes played by 8 contemporary artists. The booklet tells you all the tunings.
Also Ken Emerson's "Slack and Steel." Primarily acoustic, but some electric lap. All very tasty.
Both are available from www.mele.com or Cord International.

Do try to find Jerry Byrd's "Byrd of Paradise" album. I particularly love his version of "Adventures in Paradise" song. Don't overlook Chuck Lettes new steel CD "Cool Blue Steel" which features ISGHOF member Dick McIntyre's 1935 Rickenbacher frypan! |

There is a compilation around.
A rough guide to the music of Hawaii.
There are guides to many other countries as well.
A very eclectic mix of Hawaiian styles -- a good starting point.
Sol Hoopi to Jerry Byrd -- very different indeed.
I have a soft spot for the slack and steel album by Ken Emerson - Well crafted.
Enjoy your search,
Bill

If you have to chose only one I would go with BYRD IN HAWAII. It has it all, instrumentals and vocals. The songs are:
Kewalo Chimes, composed by Freddie Tavares who played steel for Harry Owens. A difficult but beautiful number.
Beautiful Kahana
Haole Hula
E Mama E, One of the mose beautiful and plaintive of all the old Hawaiian songs. Vocal by Nina Kealhwahamana
Analani E, Written by Alvin K. Isaacs Sr. One of the happiest and most melodic hulas ever written.
Hawaiian Wedding Song
White Silver Sands
Tiare No Tahiti, One of Jerry's favorites.
That's The Hawaiian In Me
KamalanI O Keaukaha, another beautiful vocal by Nina
Sweet Someone, A tasteful rendition with a short vocal by the trio of Pua Almeida, Sol Kamahele, Jimmy Kaopuiki.
A Cassette can be obtained from Scotty's Music.

One of my all time favorite albums (cd?) is the first Brozman/Kaapana album, Kika Kila Meets Ki Hoalu. Fantastic National and Weisenborn playing by Brozman.

While we're at it ...
Sol Ho'opi'i Volume II (Rounder CD) is the Holy Grail of 30's acoustic steel IMHO.
Anything by Dick McIntire & his Harmony Hawaiians is exceptional as well (sadly, Dick's work is almost 100% out of print, with the exception of 1 or 2 cuts that appear on compliation CDs)
Jerry Byrd's Steel Guitar Hawaiian Style & By Request, as mentioned are excellent.
Anything with David Feet's Rogers is sublime
"back porch style" Hawaiian music.
Some folks may be unaware that Ry Cooder's CD "Chicken Skin Music" features two gorgeous cuts with Gabby Pahinui on steel.[This message was edited by Andy Volk on 23 May 2001 at 01:31 PM.] |

Go to your local flee market and look for an obscure Decca lp DL4078 "The Paradise Island Trio" (big palm tree on the front cover of the jacket) produced by Owen Bradley. It features Organ, Drums, r/guitar and a "steel guitar" who is unnamed on the album. You should recognize immediately who it is on steel. {3 guesses but the first 5 won't count!} This is a nice easy listening album featuring none other than Jerry on steel. However, you won't find his name mentioned anywhere. His version of "Kilima Waltz" is to die for. [This message was edited by George Keoki Lake on 10 June 2001 at 10:45 AM.] |
