I am very close to purchasing a MSA D-10 Classic from a private party not affiliated with the Forum. The guitar is in the Mid-West. It is from the 70's and the photos show it to be in great condition. The seller is very friendly in emails and I plan to call him to talk about some of the details... I am a little nervous because it is not a forum transaction...
Do older MSA's have any mechanical issues? Is there a reliable parts supplier if I have to fix anything?
Thanks in advance to any MSA experts who can give me any advice.

I own a late '70s Classic SS and have owned a couple of other MSA's and they definitely have no mechanical issues. All of the parts were highly precision, which is something I appreciate, being a Mechanical Engineer. There have been several suppliers of parts around, you probably wouldn't have any problem finding anything you need. Lots of Forumites also have parts laying around that they are not using.

Why not post the sellers name here? Maybe a Forum member in the area knows him.
For what it's worth, you could be ripped off by a Forum member just as easily. Since you have the ability to do more detailed research into a Forum member's character and past transactions the chances of getting ripped off are considerably less, but not non-existant...

I just called the seller and it turns out that he is a Forum member, so that makes me feel better. He hasn't posted it on the forum, but he posted it on another site. I forgot to get the serial number of the instrument. We had a good long phone conversation about the guitar and, pending spousal approval, I am going for it!

| Those old MSA's are solid as a tank! I played my first one for 20 years and NEVER had a mechanical problem. The tread area on the pedals was half worn off when I sold it, but it still performed like new. I now have a 1977 MSA which plays as nicely as my 2004 ZUM. You will like that MSA... Enjoy it! |

| Grant I personally don't think you will be sorry because my first psg is MSA and will probably will be my only psg. I love mine even though it is a tank but to my way of thinking is I'd rather have a tank than a car. Think about it. Stay's in tune and has great tone. |

| No, Grant, there's no mechanical issues to worry about. I own one just like that (except for the color), and it's served me faithfully for over 30 years. (I still use it occasionally.) How many levers does that one have? |
