I have a Fender Custom where the top three strings on one neck are distorting badly. I know the trapazoid pickups can have problems but this is one I haven't heard of before.

Any ideas what might be causing this and what I can be trying to fix it?

(I'm aware that this might as easily be a mechanical issue as an electronic one but, either way, I'm out of my element here...)

Have you looked closely from the back of the guitar through the area of the pickup where the strings are coursing to be sure that nothing is caught in there like a little segment of a string or anything else and that the strings are in the center of the pickup and not touching the top or bottom at all?

Mechanical distortion can be caused by loose material in the pickup bobbin touching the strings.

I understand that sometimes the bobbin collapses in those old string through pickups, that could be your problem.

I can't see anything in there but I'm admittedly not certain what I'm looking for.

You are looking for nothing touching the strings near or inside the pickup.

So far that's what I see ("nothing") but I'll keep looking. Thanks!

Still can't find anything in there. Other things to try?
