I just saw this in the Nashville Craigslist;

https://nashville.craigslist.org/msg/5392300753.html

I wish there was a picture.

Moderator's note: The guitar has been sold.

You have to be serious to get a picture. Over $12K and it's too much trouble to post a set of pics that he apparently already has?

That is too bad that the seller lost you as a buyer, Greg. But speaking from experience, I have sold Wraparounds in this price range on this forum with ads that had neither photos, nor prices. Serious buyers don't complain. Seriously.

I don't think there is a Steel guitar or Guitar on the planet worth 12K . It's just a instrument , no more no less. There is no magic dust or anything else that's going to turn you into the greatest steel player in the world if you own it. I've never understood paying over inflated prices for instruments just because someone decided it's to cool thing to have or play .

The seller may be trying to weed out the tire kickers from the serious buyers ? Just a guess.

Regarding the price, if someone wants it enough to pay the asking price of any commodity , it's worth it. If nobody pays the asking price, the market says it's overpriced.

Could be the owner isn't willing to let it go for less, regardless of market conditions. He sounds like he knows what he has.

How much would you expect to pay for the "holy grail " of violins ? Mandolins? , etc...

To each their own.

This is only MHO but when you consider how many wrap a rounds were built in '65 compounded by how many are left now...then factor how many of those left are still playable, this price to me is not out of line. Same vintage as Buddy's Touch My Heart guitar that wound up vandalized and turned into a wagon.

I saw this guitar on the bench and makes me feel really good that the time and love was put into this gal to bring her back to life.

Now, if the Powerball cooperates in a couple of days, I know a vehicle that'll be headed south quicker than you can spit!

Whoever buys this will be a very lucky individual.

Lucky, and stupid. Really? Three times the FMV of similar period Emmons PPs?

Buddy didn't even play these guitars.

I don't see a million dollars in a '59 Les Paul, or a quarter-mil in a 1923 Gibson F-5 mandolin--I'm not a collector, I'm a picker. Now, if any of these instruments actually made me play better, then I might be willing to try, for a couple hundred more. At best, it's an imaginary market.

you know, I asked Bob Hoffnar to start this thread as an experiment....my apologies Bob, for any distress the results may have caused you. I would've loved to just post pics of this axe even if I were going to keep it as you don't see these very often in this condition....however the negativity expressed by some of the posters here is exactly why I put this '65 Emmons on CL instead of this site's Buy & Sell. And Just FYI: Buddy did in fact play these guitars in the 60's as well as later on. Of course Touch My Heart, A Way to Survive, etc., were played on a '65 guitar, but how about George Straits' So Much Like My Dad among others during that time frame? From time to time over his career E DID own and play more than a couple of these guitars, but I guess you would've had to have known him well, and spent time in his basement to be aware of that fact. And here's another nugget: I got this axe last spring and had intended to spiff it up and give it to Buddy for all he did for all of us as he had repeatedly expressed to me his desire to own another one after selling the one used on the Strait recordings, etc.....but sadly, my workload and his untimely passing has made that impossible.

If you don't want it, fine....but starting a pi$$in' contest just because its not in your price range just sounds like sour grapes. Reminds me of the time Kirk Kowalski offered a T-8 Bisgby for me on here as I had not yet gotten a computer. We asked $8500.00 and ohhhh!!! the uproar that caused!! Death threats even, I swear to God.....you know who you are.

This may be fun and games for you, but for me and others like me, its BUSINESS. Kindly keep that in mind the next time you want to troll and snipe. Maybe I should show up at your place of business and stand outside, informing incoming customers that they are paying too much for your services or merchandise......would you like it??? In the immortal words of The Worlds Foremost..."ohh, I think not".

Mike Cass

ps. if it sells as a result of this thread leading a buyer to the CL add, I will send a donation to the SGF, which was my intention all along. thanx b0b!

I bought the last wraparound that showed up. It's a 64. Even though I had to jump through some considerable financial hoops I consider it money well spent. Its a very special axe. The wraparounds have a very particular sound. I can't wait till I can it get back on the bandstand.

Somebody in Texas needs to buy this 65 wraparound and play a shuffle for a swirling room full of dancers soon !

thanks Bob, and again my sincere apologies.
BTW, I did post pics on CL, but apparently a spelling edit I had to perform either delayed or otherwise monkey-wrenched the process of the pics appearing at the time of submission. Additionally, if you'll read the ad you'll see that I offered more comprehensive pics (meaning up close, case & v/p, etc.) to serious buyers.

And again Bob, you said it all in the last line of your post...and you have no idea how much having this guitar makes me miss The Chief and Buddy all the more.

what is it that makes a 65 wraparound so rare and valuable ? Above it is speculated that many are now gone or not playable, what happened to them ? To me that sounds odd.

thx t

Right on Mike.
It is a buyer's choice whether to purchase a product or try and make a "deal" with the seller.

It is not the buyer's choice or anyone else's to slam the seller.

This country was built on free enterprise. Let's keep it that way.

Heck, I sell my products at a greatly reduced price, but I still get hit with "You are way too high".

So be it, you are not forced into buying a product from anyone.

Just my two cents worth.

What color is it?

Just kidding. I imagine a lot of the money comes from the cost of restoration.
I'm sure we all wish the guitar could have gone to Mr. Emmons, who would have appreciated it for what it is.

An interesting experiment, Mr. Cass; I commend you.
It could have been worse, you could have advertised it here under the name Franklin.

Wow,Mike! This thread certainly proves one thing: This forum's purpose as a "lively exchange of opinions and ideas". It frankly is out of my price range, but would be a very very nice thing to have,I think!

This thread reminds me of the story about a new preacher's first day on the job, who disguised himself as a homeless bum...as an experiment to see how his congregation would treat him. As expected, most recoiled from him because of his appearance and demeanor.

Later the pastor revealed his identity and made the congregation feel ashamed of themselves. The most common response to this experiment was favorable to the preacher, and what a wonderful thing he did to open their eyes to their discrimination. I happen to side with the congregation...however noble the intent...what a shameful experiment, purposely meant to publicly bring shame and embarrasment on an unwitting group of parishioners.

I think the pastor was already aware of human nature before unnecessarily cooking up the ploy.

I don't think that 12k is out of range for this guitar or others like it. These are incredibly special instruments that are historically significant and for some, have a sound that can't be replicated by anything else. I find myself more and more on the hunt for vintage instruments with that special sound that clicks for me... and yes, it's a highly personal thing. If I had a spare 12k in the wallet, I'd snap this one up in a second.

There seems to be an odd sense of entitlement in the Steel community that we all should be able to purchase these classic instruments at prices from years ago. A quick peek into the vintage instrument market may shock some but it just may also cement the fact that as Steel Players, were pretty lucky that 12k is towards the top of the food chain price wise. You can very easily double or triple that price on collectible Strats, Teles, Les Pauls, etc.

Most importantly, I think we're pretty lucky to have guys like Mike Cass, Billy Knowles, Lynn Stafford and others that rescue and restore these amazing instruments. I love working on my own Pedal Steels but I can't imagine the time, energy and expense that goes into restoring classic steels. These guys are in business and make their living doing this and should be well compensated for the effort.

I think it's a great time to be a Pedal Steel player. Sure, I wish I would have scarfed up a few classics years back, but there's still an amazing amount of great vintage Steels out there within reach if $12k is out of your range.

12K for a steel?

Here is some perspective. I'm doing a kitchen renovation on a house that I have in Kentucky. I'm putting in a 10K range and an 8K refrigerator. That's not even the high end of the price range for these things.... and they have an estimated service life of 10 to 12 years. That's 18K that will be headed to a landfill in less than 20 years.

12K for a rare, beautiful, vintage instrument that will probably last the rest of your life is a bargain.

I never expressed any concern with the price. I just think anything that's sold ought to have pictures. I can buy a $2 item on ebay or Amazon and at least get pictures. Posting this as an experiment sounds like baiting to me. This is a forum, and forumites like to chat and discuss and wrangle. I'd still like to see pictures!

Greg,
There are pictures in the craigslist ad now. It looks like the real thing to me.

I found out about my beloved wraparound from a guy who posted a link to craigslist on the forum. I was talking with Mike about the one he is selling and he said I could let people know about his listing . I don't think there needs to be any experiments to see if there are cranky people with opinions on the forum Smile

Tony, the sound of a wraparound is sorta Bigsbyish. It has that shimmer along with the focused Emmons growl. A very particular voice. I was captivated by it. The same thing happened when I played a Clinesmith. It's a sound that I feel is important for me to delve into. I'm not a rich guy. I drive a 96 Nissan pickup I bought from a girl in a bar for $1200 eight years ago. But when I hear an amp or steel that calls to me I find the money .
