What are the different way to walk up/down from a 1 to a 2 chord?
Let's use the key of A(A to B) if we could. Thanks. |

If you have the 5th string lowering a half tone, this pocket kills:
All at 5th fret: string 3&4, string 1&2, string 4&5 A pedal in, let off A pedal, lower 5th string… or the Emmons move, when you hit string 4&5 have the lower activated, release lower, add A pedal, release A pedal, engage lower.
You can start by squeezing and letting off the E-F lower on string 3&4 for even more poignancy. All kinds of stuff in that little pocket. This is also useful for IV-V chords, same position for the key of E... _________________ Stop by the Steel Store at: www.markvanallen.com

I'm feeling especially stupid today. I realise that going from a 1 to a (major)2 is so common that trying to learn to play without mastering the use of the major 2nd is like trying to learn English without using the letter "e".
What I don't understand is why you'd want to "walk" up or down to a 2 chord, when every song I see that uses it, you just go straight there without "walking" to it.
And musically, it just feels 100% good to do that, because the ear hears the "incidental accidental" - that momentary change of key centre - while you step through the 2 to some other chord, usually the V or perhaps the iii.
And what really throws me is how these two offerings "get you there" in any musically meaningful way that is better than going straight there, and I say that advisedly as I am very clear on who posted these two offerings and the part you two gentlemen play in this forum and in the steel world in general. These sequences sound to my ear to be a random sequence of diads which are relevant alone, but not together.
So guys, what am I missing? Did I miss the point of the OP, or the point of the replies? This is a genuine question guys, no smart alec stuff here, I think I'm missing something. _________________ Williams 700 series keyless U12,

The is the first example of the in between chord that could be used. The modulation chords come in handy sometimes. |

Oookay Gary, but I'm still scratching my head, as there is *no* 1 to 2 chord in "Crazy". There's a bit immediately after the start, e.g. from a C to an A, where you just walk the bass note up a half tone at a time from G to A, and I'm not sure if you are referring to that bit or some other part. But there's no D chord in "Crazy" if played in C, for example.
I guess it's just something you have to hear being played in realtime. Mark and Dick have gone quiet, so I don't know if they can help with this. _________________ Williams 700 series keyless U12,

Well, since I've been called out... I offer this:

I took it to mean, "What are the different way(s) to go from point A to point B and/or back, literally."
Since Jim did not qualify what he was using the 2 major for, I offered two ways the question could be answered if he was using the 2 major as a passing chord to the 5 or 57. That said, I stand by my offerings, basic as they may be.
Mr. Cowell is correct, the shortest way between points A and B would be a straight line. And, I believe that would be musically correct, to the best of my knowledge.
I do hope Jim gets a few more ideas. After all, that is what he asked for. |

Same for me, I read : "a different way to get from 1 to 2"
In my example, anywhere on the neck, playing a whole step lower (than the target 2 chord) on strings 3,4,5 with the 5th lowered a half tone yields the 2(9), b7, and 3 of the chord a whole step higher. So a nice dominant 9 over the two, which is very "different" than the 3,R,5 you'd get by going "straight to it". _________________ Stop by the Steel Store at: www.markvanallen.com

To be fair, Dick, I didn't so much "call you out" as ask what it was about, because when I played your stuff, and Mark's, I still got the impression that I needed to do more to go from the end of the sequences offered before I got to the II chord.
So I was saying "what am I missing?" and that question seems to still be unanswered.
By the way Dick, we have corresponded before, always very cordially, I have material from you and Mark, and I appreciate all you have done to help me and others develop.
