Over the past 25 yrs I have sold or donated guitar parts to several other builders. I have used several shippers, usually larger boxes go UPS , and smaller USPS.
Since many of you have had nightmares with your guitars, etc , I want to warn of another problem concerning the insurance.
I have lost 3 pkg in about 2 months. Small pkgs have $50. ins on each unless you pay for more. The 1st pkg was lost after getting to within 100 miles of the destination….then mail recovery took so long that no claim could be filed ,, the 2nd pkg was delivered , completely crushed having 3 parts out of 100. Once again no claim allowed . The 3rd pkg had $100. insurance , and I filed as soon as I found out the USPS was looking for the pkg.
This claim was denied as well, the reason being , that pictures and my word were not enough evidence of value.
This brings a good point…. And a warning . If you have something of value such a machine shop sending out parts amounting to $500. but only $60. of actual cost of materials, then the insurance will not cover ANYTHING. Except what the shop paid.
Strangely enough , this is just another corrupt way to avoid payment. I will not be sending ANY parts via USPS to any other builders or customers. |

I feel your pain. I NEVER use USPS and haven't in years. They are fine when all goes well, but they suck at problem resolution. Just look at their tracking number documentation compared to others, its terrible. |

Thanks for the heads-up.
Who do you use to ship a guitar? |

I use usps for small packages and have not had a problem yet. For anything over 12" in any dimension it turns out fedex can be way cheaper. Shipping a 40 lbs amp costs $110 usps and $69 with fedex. _________________ Bob |

TRUE story dang it, just a week or so back...
well here's a loop for ya..FED EX ans USPS...We ordered some stuff for Christmas for our granddaughter who lives in NY , easily 3 weeks before Christmas .
We had the items shipped to our home in NC so we could add it to the final box we ship up to NY the week before Christmas. When we order the items we selected FED EX delivery, 3 or 4 days. Awesome ! Well not really. a
a 10x10 box...not a Steel guitar sized case.
Following the FED EX tracking, the items arrived at a hub about 25 miles away in about 3 days. Then the fun began ,no more tracking updates. After another 3 days or so I finally got FED EX on the phone asking what happened.
Short answer, they passed it off the USPS the day it arrived in NC, they were longer responsible. Even though I paid and selected them.
Ok, Post Office, no way to track it, the tracking number delivery date was well exceeded so now we were at the mercy of who knows who. We basically gave up as well over a week it was still not delivered from some sorting hub 30 miles . Our Granddaughters XMAS present was never gonna make it even though it has been in NC, 30 miles away for about a week and a half now.
SHOCK, the sat before Christmas it arrives !
So Monday before Christmas I go to the PO and ask, can this be delivered to Queens NY by Wed or so, answer..YES, Priority EXPRESS, overnight. I handed over $37 bucks, filled out the form, NO SIGNATURE and off ti went for overnight delivery !. Yippee !!! well, not so fast...
It never made it over night for a Tues delivery. The WED tracking said Tuesday scheduled delivery in Queens, funny, that was yesterday. The tracking in the AM said the small 10x10 box 3 pounds was still in Queens.
the next tracking update at noon said it was in Brooklyn..it left Queens, why? who knows.
Ok here goes..the 2PM update said delivery attempted but nobody home and that they left a note. Well, my daughter was home all day waiting for any delivery from anyone. No ticket on the door. Fortunately on the tracking update it had a phone number to call, she asked whats up and they said you were not home, she obviously said uhh..yeah I was and there is no notice of delivery..and anyway it says NO SIGNATURE required. They blew her off and didn't even acknowledge that.
Then the next biggie, they would not guarantee delivery on Thursday, Christmas eve. So she went and got it herself.
yes I got my money back... _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

I'm surprised that this has not been a bigger topic , since so many of us get parts and other items through the mail. I just got a letter from the senators office and also a phone call, telling me that they really don't have much that they can do about the mail. Actually it is really more about the insurance scam that I'm concerned about. I have lost over $1000. in those 3 pkg and so far collected NO insurance. That means that all of my suppliers as well as my clients GET NOTHING through USPS. JF |
