Wonderful, Doug. Not that I want to dissect it or anything but one of the things that strikes me so strongly is.... clean! The discipline to not go to town, to not embellish for no good reason, to stay home and play it like you mean it is a lesson I have been trying to learn for...forever.
Super.

Marvelous, Doug! Jon's spot on - and so are you.

Can you post that tuning here, please? I've never been tempted to try non-pedal playing (although Mr Morrell was a magician!) but this may be the catalyst.

Thanks for the kind replies! Merry Christmas!

Jon, I like to play melodies without adding too much embellishment. There is a time for improv, and I like that too, but for melody I prefer to let that stand on it's own without a lot of fills.

Roger, this version of E13 is somewhat like E9 pedal steel guitar. Strings 5 through 10 are the same as PSG. String 4 (C#) is the note produced by pressing your A pedal. The upper strings are set up differently though and take some getting used to. When I first played the tuning (coming from pedal steel) I was frustrated because I kept hearing "pedal changes" in my head, but was unable to get them. After a while I learned to use the bar more to make up for the lack of pedals. Tom Morrell used this tuning with a "way low" E on string 10. He said that he seldom used that low E, and I didn't find it all that useful either so I went with B.

Tab:

 1  G#   3rd
 2  F#   9th
 3  E    root
 4  C#   6th
 5  B    5th
 6  G#   3rd
 7  F#   2nd
 8  E    root
 9  D    7b
10  B    5th

Another tuning option for non-pedal steel, coming from pedal steel, is A6. Imagine your pedals A & B held down (A6) and fill out the 10 strings as you choose from there. The tuning has to have the notes A, C#, E, F#

Many thanks, Doug - much food for thought. It looks like an economical tuning and seems to make good sense.

I often sit and noodle, just playing tunes on my E9 neck without any pedals - I'm 'seeing' the raises and lowers and replicating them with bar movements. I think it's good practice and, theoretically at least, it should improve my general touch.

Excuse my ignorance (I've never wanted a non-pedal guitar before so I know nothing about them), but are ten-string lap-steels common? What's affordable and/or available? I think I'll have to get one.

See what you did??? (I hope you're having a nice Christmas Day.)

Now you gotta follow that up with "Rhythm Of The Falling Rain". That would be great.

Roger, 10-string lap steels are rare, especially older ones like this Epiphone. Some of the current manufacturers make 10-string non-pedal steels, like MSA and possibly some of the smaller builders. String spacing is critical, in my opinion. The spacing should be wider than pedal steel guitar, for easier bar slants. You could do a Google search or a Steel Forum search for 10-string lap steel for more info. I expect that most of the current ones are consoles (with legs).
