I can get a WHITE brand lap steel for less than $100. I'm just looking for a student lap steel and I'm assuming this will do. Comments?

And about learning materials: are most books/videos/methods geared towards 8 string. I imagine that much of the technique would translate, you'd just be a bit limited. Am I dead wrong? Please enlighten me.

Agreed. Most of the learning material I have non-pedal is 6 string. An 8 string either gives you additional bass options or allows you to add a string low or high for extended a tuning or compromising between 2 of your favorite tunings. Perhaps the best example is Byrd's famous C6th/A7th tuning that has both a C and C# on two base strings to yield two very related tunings on a 7 string guitar.

You'll find a 6 string generally has wider string spacings and is easier to make a bar slant. Start with in inexpensive 6 string and your ear and interest will show you the way to the more advance tunings and uses of the additional strings.

William: The Forrest White steel is a high-grade instrument, essentially a Fender Studio Deluxe with a few cosmetic differences. They typically sell for five or six hundred dollars. Jump on it!
