Any old PSG is a crap shoot without a knowledgeable once-over. I would never say 'go for it' based on pictures, especially with no pics of the most important thing--the undercarriage.
If you could arrange to buy it, conditional on your bringing someone along to check it out, this is a nice deal. Too much to deal with? You will have to decide what you want to do---learn to play a 12 string or just string it up as a 10.
5 pedals are too few for a Universal setup so I'm guessing that it is Ext E9 (which is easier to convert to 10 string E9). |

The old MSA steels are absolutely bulletproof.. As close to indestructable as a musical instrument can be.. I wouldn't worry about that at all.. Plus, parts are easily available at the click of a mouse in the event you might need something.. Easiest steel of all time to get parts for.
I don't like the mica body personally, but I can say with 100% certainty that you won't find a more reliable, better playing, pedal steel guitar anywhere for the asking price... bob

Possibly an extended C6 copedant based on the number of pedals and position. I suppose it could be a an extended E9 too....but I doubt if it is a Uni.
Not a bad price... but for another 200 you could probably get a 5x7 uni in lacquer over wood.

Couldn't tell if it had 4or 5 in the levers but you could easily get an extra pedal put in there. Six pedals 5 levers would make a good basic universal set up.

he's probably looking to start on basic e9 with a simple set up. with a little 'direction' on how to approach that with this guitar, it would be a heck of a deal.
don't confuse the poor guy with universal and 12 string possibilities.
it's a good steel for cheap that can grow with him.
$950 on craigslist means $800 out the door to me. |

Thanks for all the input. I am getting cold feet about this and think I will search for something that is ready to play since I am sure that will be a challenge in itself without any mechanical issues to resolve. I really appreciate everyone's willingness to help out!

Steven - I actually called and spoke to the seller of this before Thanksgiving and chatted a bit with him as it's not too far from me either. He seemed like a nice fellow and I think would probably be flexible on the price... he said the guitar was in great shape from what he could tell, but he doesn't play and I haven't worked up the courage to go over and test it out, so unfortunately can't add much to the discussion in that department.
The others have pretty much covered everything else... though I'll add there are a few knowledgeable forum members who also live in/around Denver that could likely help you resolve any mechanical issues should you change your mind... |

That is a damn good buy. I would jump all over that with my blue suede shoes if I lived close to that guy just to have something to work on. It doesn't look like anybody screwed around with It either. The volume and tone controls are still on it. The mica looks real good behind the neck usually where it gets all duffed up and chipped like my D-10. Extended E9th possibly yes. Case seems intact too. You can get plenty of help on the forum from guys that have had these instruments. You could probably get him down some selling just before Christmas. I would move quick. Just saying Wait,lets compare it to my $1100.00 D-10, Mine; volume and tone controls,none. Pedal bar all scratched up. E9th pickup shot when I got it.. Legs look better than mine.T.L.

MSA are indeed nearly bulletproof.
I'd recommend the following test for a dead newbie:
Take a chromatic tuner with needle (or virtual needle) and a cable, and perhaps a tuning chart (ask if it's a uni or extended E9th).
Assuming it's extended E9th or universal, tune the 5th string to B, test the A pedal (tune the nut to take it to the C#), check that it smoothly goes to C# (to the same deflection each time), and that it returns to the same B.
Check a couple other pedals.
As long as they go from the same note and return to the same note, and don't hang up (from gunk), it's a good guitar.

Depends on how it was ordered. They made skillions of them. Get the serial number and post here asking Kyle, they'll have the records of how many pedals, knees and who the original purchaser was.

Well turns out this is over an hour from me and I don't have time to go see it soon. Did talk to the seller - a nice guy and he said the two pedals furthest to the left do not move strings but others do. Also he doesn't have an amp so will need to arrange to bring an amp with me and pretty busy with life right now. Perhaps others in the Denver area will able to jump on this. I am in awe of the expertise and helpfulness of the folks on this forum.

Jeeze... it's only a few minutes from me... now ya'll have got me thinking about things I shouldn't do  ...
Thing is I do want a second steel to leave at rehearsal spaces so I don't always have to break down my D10, but not sure if a U12/Extended E9 would really help or hinder... plus I'd rather whatever I pickup to be something light and able to fly with, which I'm not sure this MSA would be... |

I bought this one. Very nice unit. I am still working on it. Tt was origonally set up for Maurice's uiversal Bb6. It has been well taken care of. I may go back to the Bb6. I played Tommy's Bb6 in San Jose back about 1970 when Maurice and Tommy put on an MSA exhibition show, at that time I had one of the original MSA's that used the fulcrom pull system.

Here's a vote to try out Bb6 Universal- great tuning, and covers a lot of ground. I have Reece's last copedent on mine, but there are many variations.
My Studio Pro is 8 and 5, btw
