I have a JBL E-130 that I sold but tested it just before packing and it had a distortion and I could see sparks coming from a spider wire (not sure of terminology but I am referring to the flexible wire from the cone to the terminal). That wire was coming apart and unraveling. Does that mean the speaker has a problem that caused that wire to come apart or would it possibly just be from age a use? The voice coil still measures 4.1 ohms and the speaker sounds good until I romp on it. Can I replace that wire and if so where can I obtain a piece of it? I hope someone will help me.
Thanks,

It's tinsel wire....there's a place in Springfield Mo. that has it. Maybe you can get some info from their site.
No guru here, not sure how it's attached to the voice coil, maybe soldered like the terminal end then sealed at the cone with that special cement?
FWIW, I had one that was frayed like that a few yrs. back and I just flowed a small amount of solder over the frayed spot, but it wasn't arcing like yours. I really can't say if that's advisable though.
That repair shop should be reasonable cost for that small job and they can tell you if it has further problems. |

Well, I have now butchered this speaker but learned in the process. I couldn't get access to the voice coil leads and burned one up trying to salvage it so this speaker is history. But not until I ordered some tinsel wire. Jerry Overstreet, thanks for your input. Now I know what to call that wire. OK to close.

Sorry....hope that nothing I posted contributed to that. It can still probably be reconed if you or someone else wanted to have it done. |

Jerry, not at all. I appreciated your input. I didn't know what to call the wires or where to get them. I will most likely have the speaker re-coned.
I probably got $100.00 education anyway.
