I kinda regret selling my Webb. Venues I play rarely justified holding on to it. But I miss the largeness and cleanness of tone. My new Quilter Micro and N112 cant really compare. Putting all concerns of weight aside, how do the dirt cheap old N400 or Vegas amps compare to the Steelair for tone? Thanks all

I have a Vegas.... never quite been happy with it. ... close but not quite there. ...I have two more cards to play to dial it in. ...switch the Op amps from 2604s to 2134s and change the speaker. I prefer a Peavey Bandit to a Vegas. When I got the Vegas the original owner had put TL072s in it to improve it from stock and it had a nasty bite in it that you couldn't Dial out.

OTOH... I played through an original Session in Jim Palenscars shop.... very much more to my liking...

A factory modded Nash 400 or a Webb 6-14-E will have more gain, warmth and bass output than the Steelaire. I played both the Nash 400 and Steelaire extensively and hands down the modded Nash 400 wins. Buy a pair of Nash 400's for $800 or less and move them on a cart. Or a used Walker Stereo steel if you want one point of control. I did favor the Steelaire over the Nash 400 for standard guitar but not over a stock Princeton or Deluxe Reverb.

I have a WEBB, NV400 with Fox intense mod , and a Steelaire.
I prefer the Steelaire to the others, but I do agree with some of Gregs observations.

The Peavey and WEBB both have EPS 15 C speakers.

The gain may be greater with the WEBB and NV400, but I'm never going to need to find out. I just don't ever need to play that loud. I know others may, but for me, that volume level would be an extreme I'd rather avoid. All three amps have all the clean volume I'll ever need.

The bass response is better on the NV400 and strongest on the WEBB. The Steelaire is adequate.

I hear things differently. To me , the Steelaire sounds warmest. All three sound great , but the Steelaire has so many cool features. The three knob reverb is a great feature, the dwell knob really helps shape the reverb.

You won't go wrong with either amp, but I prefer the Steelaire.

I have not used some of the bespoke steel amps like the Webb or Milkman. I do use a Quilter Steelaire and it works quite well for me. It's exactly the sound in my head. But I practice into a DI into a PC based DAW with only reverb and no EQ or dynamics processing.

I find the EQ on the Quilter to be in exactly the right places and filter bandwidths. I can dial in enough "warm". I play an MSA U12 with an original SuperSustain humbucker.

I wonder if you could use an extension cabinet with the Quilter? They claim it'll support an extension speaker well.

I was really disappointed with the Vegas I had. Really happy to get back to tubes.
