A couple of players have asked me about the X-slant that I play in my video of "Send Me the Pillow", on the intro of the song. I thought it would be useful to post the tab here as it might be of interest to forum members.

For an X-slant you spin the bar from either a forward slant to a reverse slant or from a reverse slant to a forward slant.

Here's the video. The X-slant happens in the intro ----> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GO2Tf8KLJ14
By the way, I am not responsible for the commercial that plays before the video. YouTube sticks that in there and I have no control over that.

Tab:

C6 tuning
             A             E7               A                E7
                           reverse
    slide                  slant          X-slant
E---2--4--|--5------------|-----4-------4--|--5-------------|------------
C---------|-----4------4--|----------------|----------------|--------4---
A---------|-------4-------|--5---------5---|--4-------------|------------
G---------|---------------|----------------|----------------|------4-----
E---------|---------------|----------------|----------------|----4-------
C---------|---------------|----------------|----------------|--4---------

I came up with the slant by ear after a few minutes of playing along with the track, not by analyzing the theory, but if you're interested in the theory, here's what's happening:

The song is in the key of A and the Intro has the following chords: A E7 A E7

The reverse slant has the notes G# and D. Those two notes are in the E7 chord, the 3rd tone and the 7b.

The X-slant resolves to A and C#, the root and 3rd of the A chord.

A very cool move that's quite common in the classic early acoustic Hawaiian music played in A tuning.

The first string (E) and third string (A) are tuned the same as in C6.

Thanks Doug!! I was just listening to that on You Tube the other night. After I heard that lick I went and backed the video up to watch and listen again. Great move! You do it so smoothly and accurately that it sounds like a pedal. Thanks for posting. As always you are very generous and informative in your postings.

Thanks, guys. Yes, it sounds like a pedal steel move. Like pressing a knee lever to lower a string while pushing a pedal to raise a different string.
