I don't have a record or CD with this on it, but I remember it had a nice intro which was not the melody but more of a chord progression to set the song up.
I would love to have it for my band's arrangement. Anybody know what I am talking about and know the intro.

Look for the version on the Willie & Ray album aptly entitled San Antonio Rose.
That could be the one you're referring to....plus BE is all over that album.

Try the " Ray Price Sings Bob Wills, San Antonio Rose" album that came out about 1961 of 1962. It starts with Tommy Jackson fiddle and goes on with Jimmy Day`s steel. Jimmy Day played the steel guitar on the whole record. It is one of my favorite Ray Price Albums. I have the old 33 1/3 record which I bought in about 1963, and it still sounds like new. I don`t know if you can find the original of this cut on a C D. Maybe somewhere on the internet the original Ray Price version of this song can be found.
Jimmy puts his best into this record.

One of my favorite intro's is off of the Merle Haggard album "Tribute To The Best Damned Fiddler In The World". It features the cool key change at the end of the intro.

If I remember correctly, Bear Family Music released a boxed set of all of Ray Price's recordings, as well as all of Hank Thompson's work and several boxed set versions covering a ton of tunes by Ernest Tubb. I have Tubb's and someday I'll get around to buying the others. I believe they are all available from the ET Record Shop.

This is the song from the 1962 San Antonio Rose lp. This is exactly how it is laid down on track 1, side 1 of the lp.
From what I can find out, the cd version of this record is no longer available from Amazon or anybody else. Copies of the lp can be found on Ebay and other old record seller sites.
Song is also the first song on disc7 of the 10 cd set put out by Bear Records.

Graham, that is the one I have on an LP. Thanks for posting. The session players were the best out there, for the time the recording was made. One of the prettiest album record covers I have ever seen.

Ray's 60's San Antonio Rose was about as vanilla an arrangement as one could find. He didn't even bother to include the Bob Wills Key change thing.

Thanks for all the responses, especially Tom, for steering me to the discussion of this subject earlier this year.
My old computer and dial up internet will not let me watch U-Tube, so I can't watch all the things posted that are U-Tube. HOWEVER....I just bought one of those Trac-phone Hot Box things yesterday, that will give me high speed internet as soon as I can find somebody to set it up for me. All those foreign language computer terms in the instructions are over my head. So hopefully, I will be able to watch U-tube soon. |

Ray might not have included a key change in the intro but he sure did include a great fiddle/steel solo by Tommy Jackson and Jimmy Day.
If that makes this vanilla, give me a whole lot more of it!!!
Of course, the fiddle/steel outro in Merle's version is pretty darn good as well!
