I moved to Omaha about 8 months ago, and get the distinct impression that there aren't many steelers in the area. This could also include Western Iowa.

Sorry, but I left Shenadoah September of 1950, after playing on the staff of KMA in Shenadoah IA with Ike Everly and the rest of the staff band. Edie Comer on sax, Bob Barry on accordion, Mack Sanders, rhythm guitar, Steve Wooden, lead gutar, Bob Stotts, guitar & bass, fiddle player's name is gone from my memory (I think it may have been Buddy something.) There was a steel man with a band from Omaha who taught me "Steel Guitar Wobble" a tune he'd written & played on his double neck. I had a "home made triple neck" at the time made from Epiphone parts that I later gave to Bobbe Seymour (my nephew) when I got my first pedal guitar, after Bud Isaacs did his thing with pedals. It was a MultiKord! (that's a pedal steel???) Fender 400 w/5 on the floor next.....how come no dang knee levers?? They hadn't been invented yet?? |

Greetings Walter, you are correct steel pickers are hard to find in Husker land!
For me it is about 400 miles to visit Ray Qualls and the Kansas group in Baxter Springs,400 miles to Eastern Iowa, lots of steel there. Or 400 miles to Denver and the rocky Mountain Group. There are a few of us here however! There is a good steeler over in Columbus, Dale ReinHardt I know he is a member here but never see him post.Come on Dale get brave and post here!
I have had the good fortune that there is a Monster picker Just down the road from me in the land of Oz,Mr Curt Shoemaker Curt can play with the Best of the Big Guys!
I live about 130 miles West of Omaha on Hiway 6.Send me an E-mail maybe we can get together for a Jam Some time!

Hey Jamie, post more details about your gig here in October.
Doug, I recently (just a few weeks ago) stepped up to a real guitar with working knee levers, it's freaking me out a little, but the real fun is that I find a new lick or two EVERY time I warm up the tubes. Now, of course, I'm wondering how I ever got by without them.
Patrick, There is life in Nebraska! maybe we can meet sometime in Lincoln or something, I've been looking around for a good Jam, it seems that most of Omaha is obsessed with heavy metal (fun to play but not really steel material in my opinion). The good thing about few pickers around here is that I get recruited every time I play with my current band. I doubt I'll ever go wanting for work

Walter, Unfortunately I do not live in Nebraska (I'm in Los Angeles)but I'm a proud Cornhusker by birth(well, actually I was born in Chicago, but my parents who were originally from Nebraska moved back when I was a year old)and I spent some very happy years growing up there, mostly in Omaha but for a while on a farm near Loup City. You would think that there'd be more steelers in Nebraska but they're not real common I'm told. Omaha has a dynamic music scene if you like alternative rock, it's actually one of the hottest places and the bands and record labels(Saddlecreek records for one)are becoming nationally recognized. I go back about an average of once a year or thereabouts and perhaps we could get together when I come "home" next. Actually, with the skyrocketing cost of real estate and living and maddening crowds and traffic in Los Angeles and California, Nebraska looks better all the time! I always real enjoy corresponding with people from my home state. I would really like to hear from you, Walter. Have a great day! |

I loved my stay in Omaha:1968-1980. I learned how to play pedal steel there. I was in a touring band, Sour Mash, and we had a great run. Although most of the musicians I worked with are either gone or relocated, there are some fine steel guitarists in the Omaha-Lincoln area. Check out Pete Blakeslee or Steve "Fuzzy" Blazek whenever they perform.

Thanks for the plug, Chuck. Walter, Fuzzy Blazek plays pedal steel quite a bit with a couple of local Lincoln bands. Most recently Forty-Twenty, I think. Maybe he will post on this.
Welcome to the land that thinks western swing is a seesaw in Denver.

Hey Chris, give me a shout when you are heading to town, I could probably round up some other musicians, & maybe we can take over a bar or someones living room, & there's always my basement.
Chuck I must admit, Omaha has inspired me to really try to learn the instrument, I noodled around on my old Red Baron for 7 years, but didn't really put in to use 'til I moved here.
Donny thanks for the heads up on onlinesteelers.com , I received an email with that link from another member (name with held as he hasn't posted on this thread). I will try sending email to the ones close to Omaha, I'm thinking it might be fun to try & gather some local steelers for some Iced Tea & country pickin'. One of the things I used to enjoy was the Sunday Steel at Norris Family Music in Mesquite, TX. I don't know if they are still doing that, but it was really a great experience
Pete, How do I find out where you & Fuzzy are playing?

Walter:
My good friend Earl Pedersen plays many gigs around the Kearney, Ord, Lexington triangle. Earl lives just outside Kearney in Odessa but has a Kearney mailing address. He plays a D-10 Emmons and is a super guy. I've known him for 30 years. Got to see him last June when my wife and I were there on vacation.
I too have roots in Nebraska and lived there for awhile when I was a kid. Our family farms were near Central City and there were others near Cozad, Alliance (Berea) and Hemmingford. It was great that I got to play Nebraska alot back in the 70s and 80s while working the road.
I'd move there in a minute if my commitments would allow me to do so. It's one of my absolute favorite states.
Sincerely,
Chris "Tiny" Olson |

Still at it in the area, doing more of a singer/songwriter thing since I moved out of Omaha to small town SW Iowa. Justice is still set up and played. One of the best bands I ever heard was from Omaha, "The Rumbles". They did a great version of the tune "Jezebel" in the 1960's. |

Talk about small world. I lived in Omaha for 5 years. The Rumbles then with Bob Ford on keys was a popular band then. I didn't meet Bob but know his son Robbie and ex wife Margie. I met Eddie Haddad and know of the band Horse that featured a horn section, was stirring when horn section bands were popular then.
The Rumbles were a surf band before this.
Back then it was LA Carnival for funk, Pilot for original rock. Sound Recorders studio.
I never saw a steel player there during my time. Guess I wasn't in the right place. But we played many of the clubs in Omaha and some of the outlying towns even into Iowa. Did many a gig in Bellevue and on Offut.
Been to Council "Bluss" many times. I have family there. _________________ ShoBud The Pro 1

That was a sultry duo of siblings. The Crush comes to mind noting the Yellowstone joke. _________________ ShoBud The Pro 1
