| Greg, in your tablature Key of E, the first chord is E and the second chord is A7. I don't think that is correct. As I have heard the song played, the first chord is followed by it's minor. Meaning E followed by Eminor. So why didn't you list the E minor? |

| Long time ago that I played that but it's loosely modeled after Pete Drake's world class version. Seems like an A7th to me but then you could be right! |

| At the dance I played lastnight, the fiddle player started playing Midnight In Amarillo. I had never played the tune, although I had heard it played many times. After I listened to the fiddle player, then the guitar player, I played around the chord progression I heard. It wasn't melody, but it worked. The band was doing it in key of D, and the first two chords were D to D minor. All the steel players I have heard playing this song use the open drone strings. I am wanting to play the exact melody without using any drone strings. I never heard Pete Drake's version. |

| I agree that a Dm has many of the same notes as a G9th. I can see how you could have thought it was a 9th instead of a minor. Personally, I hear a minor as the second chord. Pete Drake singing, interesting. |

Buddy's tab says E to A7.
For playing it out; What direction the chord change goes to will depend on what root note the bass player plays...
