Thanks for providing that link, Howard. Anybody working to interpret Piazzolla's work is facing a deep challenge, but that Susan was able to inventively, and successfully, do so through her steel guitar is pretty damn great. This instrument lends itself to abstraction of melody and execution, but few really go after the boundaries and mine the deep trip, the uncharted waters, like Susan. |

This recording is a tour de force, a stunning work of artistry. Susan's deft touch, adaptable to all the many moods required by the composer, incredible intonation, intervoven lines, amazing basslines... there is so much to hear, enjoy and relish here. Track 5 alone is worth the price of admission: it's like going to church for 17.5 minutes (and I mean that in a good way; I must - I'm Jewish! )
I'm sure that it was a huge effort to re-score Piazzolla's music for solo 12-string PSG, let alone to prepare to play this material so expertly at such a high level of precision and nuance.
Clearly a high-water mark in the evolution of steel guitar music. Thank you, Susan, for showing us what else is possible with this instrument that we love. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

A good article--thanks, Howard--and well-deserved appreciation for an artist at the top of the field, with brave musical moves,
always something completely different. Good on you, Susan; I'm going to love Soledad. _________________ Those that say don't know; those that know don't say.--Buddy Emmons |

I did a gig on the same bill with Susan (she was backing an excellent countryish roots songwriter), and I was completely floored by her playing. There was a real freshness and depth there, beyond the typical "here's Lick A, connected to Lick B", while still totally "playing the gig".
I look forward to checking out this cd, definitely. |
