Honolulu Rock And Rolla-----Ethel Nakada (1958)
This is my favorite tune By Ethel Nakada.
Jules Ah See does some fancy, Jazzy playing on this tune. I think Jules may be using the B-11 tuning here?
Very sophisticated steel playing for 1958.

Thanks for that link, Roger.
She did a great version of Kaimana Hila as well.
How is it known that Jules is the steel player? |

Awesome. Swinging!
Honolulu Rock and Roll. What a mine field for a native Japanese speaker to have to wade through. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

We know that is Jules not only because his style is unmistakable, but because the original liner notes indicate that the album was made in Honolulu with the Hawaii Calls orchestra including many of its members of that era - Jimmy Kaopuiki, Sonny Kamahele, Pua Almeida, Sonny Nicholas - arranged and directed by Benny Kalama. Twelve songs - every one of them as good as this one. (The album the YouTube poster references is some compilation album from decades later.)
There is a similar album from a few years later with the same personnel but with Tennessee Ernie Ford singing and Barney Isaacs on steel.
By the way, the song is obviously not Hawaiian. It was written for Eartha Kitt.

I hear some "Teddy Bear" in there, definitely some Hawaiian War Chant, and I think it sounds like Jules was familiar with Bill Haley...it has that sort of feel. Even thought it's a bit of a pastiche, I think he does a good job with it. I hear a subtle but real transition from swing to rock.
It reminds me of this song which take the same chordal approach, but with a swing rhythm: Andy Cummings and His Hawaiian Serenaders

It is interesting that Presley's Rock-A-Hula Baby did not come out before 1961. It certainly feels as if it was influenced by Honolulu Rock and Roll-a. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

Follow the above link to a bunch of versions of the song. Some recent, some from 1956 when it first appeared.
The Mena Moeria Minstrels with Rudy Wairata on steel do a killer version. He was fantastic.
Not sure if the Les Paul and Mary Ford version is in the above link, but they did it too.
It must have made some noise at the time as hillbillies were doing it at the Big D Jamboree in Dallas in April 1956. I'd guess Joe Poovey heard Moon Mullican's version.

Here's another very similar song that is highly reminiscent of Bill Haley's band. I think this guy is from New Zealand or Australia:
