Hi,
I grew up with a Magnatone in my closet that belonged to my older brother. I'd take it out occasionally and try to play it, but without any guitar experience, couldn't figure it out. He took it home about 10 years ago when we were cleaning out my parents house. He just dropped it off at my house recently and told me to figure out a fair price for it. I'm trying to figure out how much is a fair price to pay him for it. I hope to finally learn how to play this, with help from youtube and a couple of talented friend musicians. I also need advice on strings. From what I can tell, it is the low end, student model, MOTS with the matching amp (Starlet 107), wrench tuned. A friend carefully tested it all out. The amp works, the guitar works. I don't plan on using the amp, as I have a couple of amps in my house that belong to my daughters that I hear are safer to use. My internet research left me a little conflicted as to the exact model name of the guitar. All the cords, steel bar, and 3 finger picks are in the case. It's in great condition. Screws are rusted on the amp. Friend opened up the amp and all looks great. Oh, and my brother replaced the grill cloth on the amp to something rather obviously not original, but my friend said he did a great job replacing it. I have pictures I can post in the comments below. Not looking to sell, really just want to buy it from my brother (not fair that he asked me to do the research since I can't haggle now Smile ).

Thank you,
Kathy

I've seen the steels go for as much as $300, but usually they go for well under that. There is one like your brothers on Reverb right now for $310 and it's been there awhile. I personally like them (I have two) but they don't seem to be very well regarded. They can be a pain to tune, but once they are tuned up they stay put very well. I'll let others chime in on the amp.

I would offer $200 to 250 for the steel if it were my sister.

...as far as strings go that will depend on your tuning. You can't go too heavy on the strings with these because of the design of the tuner. Once you decide which tuning your going to use I could make recommendations. I have mine both tuned to C6th. Definitely NOT the steel you want if you plan on changing tunings frequently

For C6th tuning I use (low to high) .036, .030, .024, .020, .017, .015

since your brother doesn't want it, he should just give it to you. that's what would happen in my family.
give him a hundred bucks then go sell the amp you don't want for $200.

Thanks so much. There have been a couple of the guitars only (no amps) on ebay for $400 and $475, unsold, but none listed as sold. I think you all just saved me some money. And to defend my brother, he wanted the set, but I'd asked to buy it from him. After storing it for 10 years and now moving decided to sell it to me. When this little sister did all the work for my parents' estate (both brothers live out of the area), they were easy-going, grateful, and generous. Just had to add that.
