The day before actually. So I had been agonizing over a low-cost replacement to the 6 string Morrell I have been using. So yesterday, and just about to give up, looking though Craigslist I found the winner. I took a leap of faith, $100 and a 2.5 hour drive both directions and came away with a like-new White Rogue Jersey Lightning, a gig bag, a Mel Bay C6 DVD and a Planet Waves Tone Bar. A Screaming Deal IMO.
I know it isnt high-end or anything but I absolutely love it and I had been driving my wife crazy with my worrying over it.
Thanks for the awesome gift babe!

Brent, I have the red version and I think it has the best sound of any of my less expensive steels. I was amazed at the value for the price of this steel. I took the chromed cover off and replaced the two cover screws in their holes and it makes muting with my right hand much easier.
Congrats and let us know what you think as you get familiar with the Rogue. |

Hard to beat that for $100. Those Rogue Jersey Lightning's were well liked when they were around and are good candidates for upgrades if you are so inclined. Its routed for a humbucker, so there are tons of great options that fit into a humbucker footprint. If the player side knob gets in your way, you can get a stacked concentric pot and move the tone and volume to the far side. _________________ Some misc pics of my hand crafted steels

Oh that is very very nice and the price is amazing.
I have been looking for a lap steel like that in my area but people around
here seem to think every used or "vintage" lap steel is a gold mine with strings and price it accordingly.
Hope you enjoy the heck out of it. _________________ I have stuff.

heh I agree about the gold mine comment but I suppose someone must be buying them. Yep, I plan to enjoy the heck out of it and some initial observations without yet putting many hours into it..
The pickup guard had to come off right away. Easy fix.. If anything is going to be a problem it would be the knobs. Both of them. The tone knob gets in the way when my hand is wandering to the "hollow" tone of the string. And the volume knob at the heel of my hand. I'm wondering about replacing the knobs with lower height ones. That might fix everything. Of course practice will also solve some of the hand placement issues I suppose.
Haven't replaced the strings yet and it definitely feels "tighter" then I would expect although I actually like how tight it feels.. I expect it to lose some of that when I put a proper replacement set on.
But so far I love it. If I could move move knobs to say.. behind the bridge it would be perfect.

This is something I will certainly look into thanks! Does anyone else have any knob mod suggestions? |
