Do you want to go back in time before the top two strings appeared and take a pull-release nostalgia trip? Or do you want to do something modern and clever?

Probably back in time. Definitely pull / release.

I want to stay close to the standard E9, just use 8 strings. I'm thinking (high to low):

G#
E
B
G#
F# (maybe)
E
???
B

With the normal 3 pedals 2 knees.

Here's a page from the history book - maybe it'll give you some ideas. I can't remember who posted it - maybe they'll chime in and claim it. The most surprising thing to me is that our old familiar 8th string E took so long to arrive.

I personally would use the top 8 strings. Thars what I had on the triple neck National I started on. I could live (not happily) without the low B and D, but never without the F# and D #.

Good choice!

I don't think Ralph played a ten string tuning in 1959. He was still on 8.....I think...[/img]

I use the top eight with the chromatics. I would wager that most people use the top two a lot more than the bottom two. I use them ten times more at least.

On my 1950's Fender eight string pedal steel, I had the chromatic and then pushed onto a Zum Encore with ten strings. I found it much easier to move to ten strings after that switch. JAMES TAYLOR

Thanks for the ideas. I've played the basic 3 pedal 2 knees, and even though I added the RKR, I never used it.

For now I'm going to stick with the Emmons setup, but strings 10 - 3, and expand on what I do with that.

Part of my problem is the knees, feet, and hips don't work as well as they used to.
