This company makes regular electric guitar strings in different colors. Just wondering if anyone has used any of their their strings before. I mark my E strings with a red marker to help me with my grips on my universal. Would be nice to have a solid red (or whatever color) instead of marking the strings.

Thanks

I haven't used this brand of colored strings, however I have used Black Beauty Strings By DR. They were nice looking until the coating wore off where the pick contacts the strings. So after a while I ended up with black strings with an area of nickel string showing through. The Aurora strings may be made different however.

Why would you mark the strings?

+1 on marking strings.Playing universal means you have to keep your eyes on a lot of strings.Anything to help stay oriented.I'm going to try that out.Kristen, thanks for the idea! Cool

Funny how this topic came up because I'm going to try a Universal and the first thing on my list was to mark the strings(with a Marks-a-lot or colored strings), marking the roller-nuts, or placing tiny round stickers on the fret board at frets 3,7,12, and 17......all of this just until I got comfortable with it then take them off.

**my tuning/copedant will be different than the popular Newman one so I may only need to mark string #10. My set-up will have a standard E9th tuning that is extended so all the 10string grips apply. It's just a matter of getting acclimated to the 2 extra strings.**
I based my tuning from one Buddy tried years ago. The limitations of the mechanics of the guitars at that time wouldn't allow someone to try what I'm experimenting with.

Hope to see more ideas on this topic.

Red magic marker on the 8th string and you will get past this pretty quick learning the grips.

That sounds like what he is doing now. Would marking it all the way from bridge to nut affect the sound of the string?

But my advice is, don't use the colored string for too long. It will become a crutch. You could probably get the grips down, and also important, get your hand positioned to where you don't have to look at it and the strings. with probably 12 hours of practice (not at the same time, break it up over a week or two).

Marty mentioned a good reason for marking the strings while switching from a 10 to a 12. That is one of the reasons I never, and would never, went the Universal route. I've been playing 10 strings too long. If I was starting out fresh today, knowing what I know now, I would definitely consider going the Uni route.

When I restrung my tricone as C6, the store didn't have all matching strings, and the string for my A was a different kind of bronze, helped out a lot to "see" that minor note.

I could see it helping on 10 string as well, maybe just to see where the 5th string was, since I seem to get lost a bit sometimes with all 10 strings (12 strings just boggles my mind....) I may have to try ordering one when I decide to restring (which I admit I have been putting waaayyyyy off....)

Look at your fret markers. I play a 12 string Sierra.
One of the fret markers is positioned in a way that indicates the 4th string E, another fret marker shows the location of the 8th string E.
I know all brands have different graphics for their fret markers, but some time the design of the fret marker will help you locate a string.

".Playing universal means you have to keep your eyes on a lot of strings."

I switched fro a D-10 to a Kline Uni virtually overnight. Had to look for a couple days, that's it. Didn't have to mark any strings.
