Can someone let me know who the pro steel players are in the Austin and San Antonio areas?
I have something I'm trying to do and need a smokin player in these areas.
Is Johnny Cox still there?

There are a lot of smokin" players herein Austin, not just the guys mentioned.
James Shelton, Roy Carroll (who?), Jim Loesberg, Lloyd Mangum, and many more. There is a bunch in San Antonio that I am not familiar with. Depends on what you are doing, you can pick from commercial to swing to jazz to whatever you need.
P.S. Johnny Cox is in Branson.

How bout Jody Cameron?
Is he in the area?
Maybe someone that plays more like Jernigan or Emmons or Mike Johnson. Someone that plays for a living and not a weekend player.

Jody Cameron plays for Bobby Flores. I bet that's pretty close to a full time playing job.

I don't know if he's still active around SA, but Denny Mathis is outstanding.

A nice man who was very helpful to me when I played a 'Patsy' show there many years back.

Hey Bill, howya doin? Very Happy

Dumplin' is in Branson nowadays, and Wayne Dahl is back in Nashville.

Way more info than you need or asked for, but since the topic came up, in the greater 5-county Austin metroplex, those I know that are playing gigs for pay (some only occasionally) are:

Jim Loessberg
Bert Rivera
Geoff Queen
Marty Muse
Steve Palousek
John Russell
Emmett Roch
Scott Martin
Nathan Fleming
David Biller
Allan Kentfield
Neil Flanz
Lauren Ellis
Danny Hawk
Nathan Delacretaz
Bob Hoffnar
Ricky Davis
Jerry Harkins
Simon Pogue
Jimmy Grabowske
Bobby Snell
Dennis Bailey
Adam Goodale
Bill Dearmore
James Shelton
Price Porter
Don Pawlak
Scott Walls
Kim Deschamps
Dr. Jon Jaffe
... and your humble correspondent.

Those in the greater San Antonio area I'm aware of are:
Kenny Grohman
Rick Price
Tommy Detamore
Randy Gilliam
Butch Cornwell (last I heard)
Don Bierstadt
Denny Mathes
Scott Moon
Jerry Blanton
Mike Kowalik
Larry Horwedel
Don Sowersby
Roger Edgington
Randy Reinhard

Many more folks around here play steel but not professionally or in church only. Apologies to any of my friends I've omitted because of CRS disease that afflicts the elderly. Very Happy

You can't count Junior Brown as a real steel guitarist because, he, like, sings, and writes songs and doesn't stare at his fingers all night and, entertains n' stuff. And gets paid too! In money! Sellout.... Razz

A couple full time guys off the forum radar that can certainly play are

Simon Page
Zachary Moulton

there are more.

What is the gig and money ? Everything depends on the answers to those questions.
