Best Pup For A Supro

I bought a 1947 Supro that was stripped down to just the body. Even the Supro badge is gone. What pup would you guys recommend, and what nut would you recommend. I need a bridge too. I can probably find knobs, and I'll use pickguard material instead of the original metal cover. I'm not trying to restore it, I just want a cool sounding functional LSG. Any input is welcome.[/b]

What kind of music do you play? That should determine what type of pup you use.

Or, are you looking for a period-correct pup?

In my mind, I hear Supro, and can think of nothing but the Valco Coodercaster pups. haha

I play a little bit of everything, so it's hard to pin me down there. I have a P-90 I could throw in there. My Ric is set up for C6, so that covers the country side of things, plus Hawaiian. I have a Magnatone which has a really nice warm tone, and I think that pup is original. Then there is the barking Kay which I have tuned for blues and rock. Confused

I thought about a resto, but that would be the more expensive route. Plus, where am I going to find a Supro badge? Shocked

The Chicago Steel p'up is a good option if it will work with your particular guitar body, $165.

Or you could get the String Through which is an exact reproduction of the classic Supro pickup but it's also $265. For not a lot more than that you could buy a whole 'nother 6 string Supro lap steel in fairly good condition.

Different style lap steel, I have a new Asher Electro Hawaiian Jr. with the Bill's upgrade kit installed including a pair of Lollar Imperial humbuckers. These pickups kick a$$. It's why I brought up the subject of Lollars - first instrument I have owned with Jason's pickups and I am impressed.

I have an early '60s Supro that I've owned since I was a kid in the 1960s with a missing badge. I'd like to know where I could get a replacement badge myself.

Thanks Mark. I am familiar with Lollar. I don't know if I can justify even 165.00, since that would exceed what I paid for the guitar. I don't know what I was thinking. I thought it would be a fun project though, and I have drilled the hole for the modern input jack, and I installed new tuning machines.

What kind of budget are you wanting to work with? I'm not sure what kind of routing / footprint you are working with, but these Tele style cut bridges and pickup can be a lot of fun and not too expensive. The pickup in this one is a BG-Pups Rockwind. Its voiced to be big and rich and a little lighter on the twang. http://bg-pups.com/

Budget is not a problem. But it seems unrealistic to put a 165.00+ pup into a LSG that I paid 75 bucks for, or is that not unrealistic?

Well, the thing that is going to make it cool sounding is the pickup you put in it. So I wouldn't correlate the cost of the pickup to whatever the body cost. If budgets not an issue, pay for the pickup that makes the sound you want. I'd second the Lollars. I have both the Chicago and the String through (on different guitars) and they both sound fantastic.

I had pretty much the same thing. I went with an overwound Telecaster pickup, and a bridge from Ryan Rukavina. It's not like a vintage Supro, but I'm very happy with it.

I got the pickup from Ryan as well. I believe that it's a Squier Tele pickup with the magnets replaced and extra winding.
