I've had a GFI with stock humbucker for years now,but never warmed up to it, like my old Pro 2 Bud. Wonder if a single coil would make any real difference? |

Yes, it would make a difference. The difference between you liking it or not liking it? No idea.
Another thing you might try is a Sarno Freeloader -- a buffer that you can dial to your liking (maybe). |

Joe,
What is it about your sound that you don't like?
Is there something you hear in other guitars that you feel is not present in yours?
What type of sound do you desire?
Best regards,

Chris, mica MSAs were dieboard, and sound great with a Truetone. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects |

My wife has a GFI Expo S-10 with the stock GFI II pickup (which is basically a George L's E66). It can get a lot of different tones depending on the amp and how its set up. I've used it on some recording sessions and got a "dark" sound for one session. However, I doubt that you will ever get it to sound like a Sho-Bud no matter what pickup - just as you couldn't get an Emmons, Carter or whatever to sound like a Sho-Bud. |

My GFI SM-10 has the stock pickup on it. I run mine into a Behringer mixer, and can get pretty much any sound I want. I usually use very little EQ though, and use a Li'l Izzy for a fuller brighter sound, or if want a darker sound, just remove the Izzy. _________________ Amateur Radio Operator NA4IT (Extra)

I may, in fact, be nuts. However, I am screwed onto the right bolt... Jesus! |

I have a humbucker in my Stage One. I usually prefer single coils but to put a single coil in this particular steel would have required routing and who knows what else to make it fit. But one thing that made all the difference in the world for what I like was getting a Li'l Izzy. All of a sudden there it was, the string separation, clarity, that nice little edge, all the things I like about a single coil. I don't think about my pickup anymore. |

+1
I use a different buffer, but same result: When it comes to "tone" my Ultra with GFI II PU doesn't lack anything in comparison to my other steels with single coil PUs. |

I've tried a lot of different pickups on a lot of different steels , but the one pickup that I would continue to go back to is the Jerry Wallace Truetone pickup woumd to 17.5K ....I know a lot of guys like to go to an 18.5k on the C6 neck .....I use 17.5k on a Universal , and on an E9 neck .....Brite enough to cut thru, and full enough to have enough body to not sound muddy !.....Jim |

Another option would be to put in a reissue L-705 and add a single-coil switch. I would suggest also adding a series/parallel switch. The parallel configuration sounds about the same as the single-coil, but is still humbucking. At least this has been my experience on my Carter. I was a single-coil die-hard until I tried the 705 this way. |

Bruce is correct on this one.. The 705 will give you a couple different sounds, and IMHO would be a great match for your GFI,, I had a GFI Keyless, and it was middy and nasally.. Pretty dark sounding at times as well, depending on room.. Never liked the sound the GeorgeL pickups produced in those steels, although many guys sound great with them...I bet a 705 with its ability to isolate coils will give you what you want.. A lighter brighter sound, but with the ability to beef it up.. I have one in my old Marlen and like it a lot... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

The 705 re-issue is what I've just replaced an older George L TW pickup with. I tend to watch what Tommy White and other players use. 705 is in another range completely. The Alumintone (sp?), I've been watching also w/players. Volume pedals also have something to do in how a guitar sounds. I just switched back to the Hilton pedal and Live Steel Strings. It's as different as switching from a 4 cylinder to a powerful V-8. Add an EXCEL guitar and the race is on! |

At least you guys didn't have the Barcus-Berry pups in your GFIs! I picked up a D-10 at a half=price inventory reduction sale at Guitar Center. Stole it basically! But it had the BB pups and they were both screwed up. One read 60,000k ohms. What a sound! Gene and Brightman were friends, and Gene gave me new pups at cost. Good guy. They sounded good, but after building Performance guitars, and playing my Kline, I just didn't like the GFI much. Traded it for a Fingertip. Brilliant design for assembling them though. I bet you could put together 4 or 5 in the time it took me to assemble one Performance! _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!

I remember the PERFORMANCE guitars well. Very well built and Jerry really liked the E66 pu for the guitars. He sent me one to sale for him since I was selling guitars everywhere. Hated to hear of his passing later. We had some good conversations about guitars, several times. |

Billy,
Jerry mentioned you to me many times. He was fond of you! Did you only sell one? I know he trusted you completely. RIP Jerry! _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!

Well actually, I think Jerry had sent me either three or four guitars. I do remember a red S-10D he sent me and I played it while we were on the phone. Something happened and Seymour got the guitar and sent it back to Jerry and he sent it to me to sell. I started to keep it but I had other dealers that I was moving guitars for. I think the red S-10D was sold to a player in Alabama. I believe three more were sent to me and were moved throughout the USA. I was moving and selling guitars quicker than the builders could build them at that time. I really hated to see Jerry pass, as we were talking about John Hughey during our last conversation. |

Yeah Billy, we did send you the last two guitars which I carefully assembled for Bobbe. I spent a lot of extra time on them, deburring, polishing, etc.. Jerry had sent Bobbe two guitars, and Bobbe was very enthusiastic about them. Sold them right away. On his website he put up three pages of pics of the guitar's details, and ordered two more. Then, I figure some other manufacturers that Bobbe sold pressured him, and he sent those two guitars back unopened, and unexplained. I was very disappointed but told Jerry it was just business. You got those two, and they were the best two ever made! Tough situation for Jerry, and he soon closed up. _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!
