Here are a couple of dead-simple but very useful runs to use in the key of E for opens or endings. They use notes or chords against the open E string pedal point. I've heard run # 2 used in an easy listening context by the great studio guitarist Tony Mottolla and as a blues ending by the smoking guitarist, Ronnie Earl.
