Very nice trip down memory lane. Thanks for sharing.
If anyone would like to try this tune as a vocal, check out the version by Pat Donahue from Prairie Home Companion. It's called "Sushi-Yucki." |

Hey Dom, isn't that the Sushi Song?
I come from Minnesota,
I went to Tokyo ta,
Visit the land of enchantment and strange pagoda,
I almost died, the night they tried,
To make me eat that yukkie sushi. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

Fun tune, Dom! Nice job. I worked it out in open D on acoustic last summer. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

I sing it using the English Lyrics below from the Guitar Guy. By the way, theguitarguy is a great source for lyrics and chords, I have used it for many of my background tracks.

I performed this song with vocals at a few of my performances this week, and I was surprised that several people in the audience knew the lyrics and were singing along. I had only heard the Japanese version until recently. _________________ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYG9cvwCPKuXpGofziPNieA/feed?activity_view=3 |

One of my favorite tunes in C6 or A6 -- especially considering the title has nothing to do with the rest of the song. Sukiyaki is a beef dish about halfway between a soup and stew."The title "Sukiyaki", a Japanese hot pot dish, does not appear in the song's lyrics, nor does it have any connection to them; it was used only because it was short, catchy, recognizably Japanese, and more familiar to English speakers. A Newsweek Magazine columnist noted that the re-titling was like issuing "Moon River" in Japan under the title "Beef Stew".[8]
Originally, it was a Japanese protest song over continuing occupation: "Ue o Muite ArukÅ" (上をå‘ã„ã¦æ©ã“ã†?, "I Look Up As I Walk") is a Japanese-language song that was performed by Japanese crooner Kyu Sakamoto, and written by lyricist Rokusuke Ei and composer Hachidai Nakamura. Ei wrote the lyrics while walking home from a Japanese student demonstration protesting continued US Army presence, expressing his frustration at the failed efforts.[1] In Anglophone countries, it is best known under the alternative title "Sukiyaki," a term with no relevance to the song's lyrics.

Sukiyaki (鋤焼?, or more commonly ã™ã焼ã) is a Japanese dish that is prepared and served in the nabemono (Japanese hot pot) style. It consists of meat (usually thinly sliced beef) which is slowly cooked or simmered at the table, alongside vegetables and other ingredients, in a shallow iron pot in a mixture of soy sauce, sugar, and mirin. The ingredients are usually dipped in a small bowl of raw, beaten eggs after being cooked in the pot, and then eaten.
Generally sukiyaki is a winter dish and it is commonly found at bÅnenkai, Japanese year-end parties.

Nice, Dom! I used to have that vinyl of Kyu Sakamoto back in the day. Wish I still had it. _________________ Excel D10 8&4, Supro 8, Regal resonator, Peavey Powerslide, homemade lap 12(a work in progress) |
