Topic: New home made 8 string Lap Steel |

I just finished building this 8 string lap steel. It is made of cherry, with a maple fretboard. The fretboard was made on a laser engraver. It has a 24" scale, tuned to A6. I tried tuning to C6 with high G but the sound was too shrill. The A6 range sounds better to my ear. The guitar is fairly heavy and has great sustain. For the finish I used Tru-Oil over a light coat of shellac. The nut and bridge came from Rudy Rukavina. The pickup is a George L. EON. Now I have to learn to play before I can post sound files.

| I've been thinking about building an 8 string myself. I haven't been able to find 8 string parts though. How can I contact these guys you just mentioned for your parts? I'm thinking about making mine out of all maple. Does anybody have any suggestions for what kind of wood to make it out of? I would probably need a fret board too, because I don't have access to a laser engraver. |

James, I got the nut and bridge by searching for lap steel guitar parts on ebay.
The George L pickup is made for 10 string pedal steels. There are also reproductions of early 8 string pickups from Lollar and Seymore Duncan.

Regarding the fret board, Geogeboards makes great printed vinyl boards, that have self adhesive. They look great, very professional. I recently had him make one for me to use on one of my builds, here is a picture of it:
