I need a volume pedal for this weekend. I can get one locally but they don't carry any of the top brands. Is anybody using an Ernie Ball, Dunlop, etc. with any success?

They're adequate, but often have a 250 K pot, so there'll be some tone suck.

Some of the older Ernie Ball pedals were made for steel. They have the jacks on the side and the better pots. Stay away from the new ones with the jacks on the end. The jacks are in the way on steel, and they have cheap pots of the wrong value.

I've used Ernie Ball and Sho-Bud pedals for years and have gotten great tone and they work well.
I almost always use a Lil Izzy between the guitar and the pedal . Or I have on occasion used some other buffering device . That's really the key to using some of the less expensive volume pedals .

The Dunlops are good, but the gain increase is quick. A little tricky to use.I.M.O. T.L.

Look at this thread. It tells how to mod a CryBaby to use as a volume pedal. I even show how to build your own volume pedal and where to buy the parts in the 8th post down.
