Today I had a chance to play #082 with Ruby Falls at Jubitz.
The pro's:
Clean and clear with great string separation
In your face volume and presence on every string
Easy quick short action
The C neck was maybe the most alive and clear sounding I have ever heard, like ever!
The con's:
I don't think I could find any
I can see why the studio guy's like this guitar, I think it would lay well in the track.
I can see why others use it on stage it cuts really well in a loud situation.
I can see why the local owner was interested.
Unless I steel it from him, I do not see where I would ever get the $$$ to get one,, but that is another story
So congrat's to my friend, we can have fun with it until another monster comes along. _________________ '70 D10 Black fatback Emmons PP, Hilton VP, BJS bars, Boss GE-7 for Dobro effect, Zoom MS50G, Stereo Steel amp, Telonics 15” speaker.

I had been playing a D-10 PP Emmons. The day I got my Franklin (new) and played it, that was the end of the Emmons and I sold it about 2 weeks later. As good a sound as the PP Emmons are I don't miss it. |

I borrowed Mike Fried's D-10 Franklin for a gig one night in the mid 1980's, and with the first note I couldn't believe the loud highs. I had to crank down the high's on my Webb amp to not tear my head and ears off. I didn't know then how to properly evaluate pedal steels, so I can't chime in on playability. But for me the pronounced high end was a bummer. Are all Franklin's like that? _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION

I love these kinds of stories...
I was in an RV park in Bandera...I was practicing in my bus when a gentleman knocked on the door and asked if I gave lessons.....I said sure....He came back 10 minutes later with a mint black D10 8+9......I too was just in awe of the tone of this thing..... _________________ ARTIST RELATIONS: MSA GUITARS

I have this one, it is one of the first Franklins, with a single digit serial number. It was Bobby Black's in his Asleep at the Wheel days.
Rebuilt and new mica by Mike Cass.
I may sell this sometime in the near future, not playing any C6th.

I played a single neck Franklin at a bar in one of the northern suburbs of Chicago years ago when the band I was in played a set with the house bands equipment. I remember it being a nice Steel but, IMHO, I didn't think it sounded or played any better than a Zum or a JCH, and it certainly didn't have the classic tone of an old Sho Bud or a P/P. |
