I have a pre WWII Ric Silver Hawaiian with a severely corroded nickel fishish., but the pickup is fine So I got to thinking: Has any Forumite ever tried installing a Ric 1.5" pickup in a custom made lap steel? If so, how did it sound? Would a guitar made of some nice hardwood and a Ric pickup installed sound as good as a Bakelite? Was that essentially what the Trottmor that JB played for a while was?
Also, has a a successful imitation of the Ric 1.5" pickup ever been made? Gee, I Wonder what a 1.75" or 2" would sound like?
Inquiring minds want to know. |

Bob, Rick Turner makes a horse shoe pickup copy for his guitars. Maybe it would work on a lap steel?

I am going to do the same thing with a 1-1/4"? rick pickup I have laying around. I am sure you will get that same high driving tone but there may be some subtle differences. You probably wont have the tuning problem that the Bakelites have.
No my PU is not for sale. |

Sorry, my pickup is not for sale.
Actually, the Silver Hawaiian is great for playing through an overdriven amp. Case in point: Stephen Miller playing "September Song" on Ian McClatchie's Silver Hawaiian and amp on his Dobrology CD--a great album. Although I do some overdriven blues, for the most part I like a clean tone.
By the way, as strange as it may seem, there is really no comparing the 1.25" pickup to the 1.5" Yes, the Rics with the 1.25" pickup sound great, but the 1.5" is incredible. That's why I was wondering about a 1.75 or 2"!
Andy, thanks for the lead on Rick Turner pickups.
