Just booked my airlines tickets, prices are holding steady, so think ahead and book now. Support a really good event, lots of players from California to Texas. Several of us are coming down from Portland to slap backs and tell lies and get some sunshine.

There are several local players working in the area also like Mike Smith and Danny Sneed. So between the steel show on Thur-Sat and a club the other nights, make it a multiple day event, stay a week, you deserve it.

Like most shows there are vendor tables and large rooms where one can test drive steels and other gear.

The Phoenix show, the SWSGA Convention, is one of the top two events for me every year, with the TSGA Jamboree. Along with the opportunity to hang once again with old and dear friends, I love the musical diversity the show offers.

There are a few of the regular top performers from the East like Jernigan, Hicks, and Dodd; Texas is also represented by players like Albert Talley, Jim Loessberg, Mark Giles, Rose Sinclair, and your correspondent, as well as Colorado players like Chuck Lettes, Chris Kennison, Bob Case also get well deserved exposure. Of course excellent AZ players like Frank Carter are featured as well.

Most importantly for me is that I get to hear and hang with many old friends from CA, all excellent steel players as well as masters of other instruments: Doug Livingston, Boo Bernstein, Skip Edwards, Jim Palenscar, Rick Schmidt, Harry Orlove, Peter Freiberger, and of course Jay Dee Maness and western swing legend Bobby Black.

With the exception of Jay Dee, these are players that are seriously under-recognized by the steel guitar community, IMHO. The SWSGA show offers folks the opportunity to hear some incredible music not ever performed east of the Mississippi.

I love coming out to The Barrett Jackson Auction and The Phoenix Steel Show...Great weather, Hot Rods, and Steel Guitars....And visiting with Ole Fred Justice, he's kinda like "Elvin Bishop Settin' on a Bale of Hay", "He Ain't Good Lookin' But He Shore Can Play". He builds a fine steel, and even puts up with me settin' down behind one of his steels to Butcher some steel tunes.

Larry, just because most of them have turned me down doesn't necessarily mean that they all will...

I love the Phoenix show -- great music, incredible camaraderie, really fun "hang."

Herb, thank you so much for the kind words. And back atcha! It's always great to see (and hear) you too -- one of the highlights of the trip.

It's also wonderful to meet all the other steel players from across the country.

I feel like all of the California players have been adopted into the SWSGA family and it is greatly appreciated. I'm hoping my schedule permits me to be there again this year!

Boo your absolutely right, the California players are a big part of the SWSGA and were so proud of that equation.
I to hope you can make the 2016 Show Boo.

I'm practicing for Phoenix, always a great show. I believe with a lot of hard work in the woodshed I can embarrass myself slightly less every year.

Many times everyone on stage last year played steel as well as whatever they were playing.

I was emceeing and made the statement, "Everyone on stage plays the steel ..... except Harry of course."

It has been a running joke. We even had a joke going to find him a steel guitar player.

I think Jay Dee is the only one of us who started as a steel player.
