When I played pedal steel full time I got used to breaking strings, so I could change out the high (g#-a) in a minute or less. But Now playing non-pedal I never break a string! (ok once in 10 years)
Yet I still carry a bunch of extra strings with me...?

I carry a spare E9th and C6th set, but rarely break a string. I change strings fairly often and that avoids metal fatigue.

It is near impossible for me to get non-pedal strings with the gauges I prefer so I order single strings, in bulk to get a discount. Hence I always have at least two sets in the case at any one time.

I always carry a spare set of strings, even though I've never needed them for steel.

My band wants me to bring a back up steel, and I probably will start. At least for the larger venues.

It was so seldom that I ever broke a string on my EMMONS.....I normally didn't worry about replacements.

Just before my retirement, I started carrying an extra G# string, then a couple of them and during my last years, a complete set of both tunings.

String breakage truly was NEVER a PROBLEM for me.
I credit the guitar for this factor.

i carry at least a replacement for everything generally and maybe a couple of 10, 14, 17, 20,
which are what i use.
