Years ago, Gary Carpenter made a modification in Gary Hogue's old '76 Emmons push/pull ...
A lot of people have asked exactly what that modification is and what it was for ... and how it is tuned. I used to know that answer fully, but for the life of me, I can't remember it now (must be the price of turning 60 years old; can't remember as well as I used to).
Does anyone have Gary Carpenter's number? I'd love to contact him and have him refresh my memory on that modification. _________________ 1986 Mullen D-10 with 8 & 7 (Dual Bill Lawrence 705 pickups each neck)

Okay, I just got off the phone with Carp, and he gave me the full low-down on it.
The lowers are still totally push/pull, but using the same mechanics (but adding some more bell cranks, rods and the nylon tuners), the raises became double raise all-pull. Examining the string fingers, it appears that a second row of holes for raises were drilled into each string finger. The cutout in the end plate was necessary for the modification.
So, there it is. I played that guitar for years and remember having to tune it that way, but couldn't remember exactly what the mod was all about. You might say it's half push/pull and half all-pull.
One thing that Gary Hogue and I both noticed before and after the mod was done was in the playability of the guitar. It played good before the mod, but played like a dream after the mod. Have always loved the feel of that guitar. _________________ 1986 Mullen D-10 with 8 & 7 (Dual Bill Lawrence 705 pickups each neck)

Soon as I can get my nephew to turn the guitar over for me, or get underneath it, we'll take some and I'll put 'em on here, Steve. _________________ 1986 Mullen D-10 with 8 & 7 (Dual Bill Lawrence 705 pickups each neck)

Steve ... the old girl really needs a cleanup underneath ... I got a quick shot up under the changer. Haven't been able to turn the guitar over yet.

Jim thanks so much, it just hit me. I remember reading somewhere on the forum where you had hurt your back or injured yourself somehow. Your a true gentleman. I really feel bad asking you for pic's of the bottom of the guitar. Hope you get well soon.

Exactly what was that conversion sposed to accomplish?
In my estimation all it did was screw up the p/p tone. On the pulls, you eliminated the metal to metal contact that contributes to the tone of the p/p. |

Well, Erv, actually I've no idea why the mod was done or the purpose behind it ... Gary Hogue had that done pretty soon after he bought the guitar. As far as the tone? The modification didn't seem to affect any of its push/pull tone at all ... here's some examples of it ... always continued to sound pretty push/pull across the board to me, despite the mod.
Gary Hogue (on this modded black Emmons) and Junior Knight (on a Sho-Bud if I remember right).

Those were studio cuts. Here's a quick example of Gary on that guitar at a live gig simply recorded on a cassette ...

One of the key ingredients to the p/p pull sound are the solid stops that are incorporated in the changer. You can tune all the pulls and pushs at the changer before you hook up any of the rods. It appears that with the mod, that is no longer possible. If it ain't broke, why fix it? |

Well, I've no idea why they did that mod, but that guitar always has (and still does) sound fantastic. And, it plays wonderfully. It was one of Gary's two favorite guitars ever, and one of my two favorites as well. An absolutely wonderful axe. I love it. _________________ 1986 Mullen D-10 with 8 & 7 (Dual Bill Lawrence 705 pickups each neck)

it's an anti-zum reverse hybrid!
one of a kind. even rarer than a zum hybrid.
it may get the 'rube goldberg honorable mention'
award on the family tree of pedal steel. |

I'm with Erv on this one, though Carp is a good pal and so was Gary. With half-tone swivels on the bellcranks, two raises per string are de rigeur on the PP. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Chris,
You are exactly right about a reverse Zum Hybrid.
On the Zum, the raises are tuned like a p/p and the lowers are like an all pull. |

While I also don't see the utility in the mod, except maybe to time pulls more easily(?), I do know that Carp is brilliant. I'm sure the work was done very well. Gary doesn't mess around. |
