I have a string-thru lap steel in Open E
lo-to-hi...E-B-E-G#-B-E
Thinking of tuning it to either Low Bass Open A
lo-to-hi...E-A-E-A-C#-E
or Low Bass Open G
lo-to-hi...D-G-D-G-B-D
If I go to Open A, I have to raise the 2nd string one whole tone...and might be a bit tight.
However, if I go to Open G, I have to lower the 5th string 2 whole tones...likely to be "flabby".
Any feeling as to which would likely be the least problematic?
Thanks. |

Tuning up a tone on the second string won't hurt much if your guitar is short scale. I'd buy a couple of new strings for the lower tunings.

depends on what gauge strings you're using, yeah?
if you need to go back and forth, maybe decide whether the G or A tuning is more important for your gig, and if it's the G tuning, nudge the strings towards the heavier side.
i'd rather retune to open A, cause it's be a lot quicker, but I'd rather play in open G, so...
you can always do the G tuning and capo up to A, too...

Thanks. Thinking that I will tune to Open A and see how the 2 string holds up going to C#. |
