I will buy this speaker -- Peavey Black Widow 1203-4 Speaker 12", 4 ohms ASAP for my 112 if it is a high quality speaker.
Comments please.

Should be fine. Hang on to the Blue Marvel because many people say it's about the best match.

Thanks Lane, just got off the phone with Mike Brown at Peavey and he said the same thing. There's a pair of those Black Widows on craigslist for 30 bucks a pop; thought it might be an upgrade but I guess I'll pass...

Tommy White wrote some years back that changing the speaker really improved the tone. I'll have to look it up and see what speaker Tommy recommended.

It was an eminance neo sspeaker..and a mod reverb tank
I bought 1 of those nashville 112's once ..did everything you could do to it ..telonics speaker mod reverb.. fox IC chips.. beam blocker..stuffed a steel guitar black box in the back ...was no big deal ...sold it ..
Back to the nashville 1000 fox chips telonics speaker 2 -1/4 inch layers of AC foam filter behind the grill cloth ..and its,sounds pretty darn good ..cant beat 300 watts thru a 15 inch speaker ..and the telonics speaker dropped about 10 pounds off the 57 pound amp ..got a removable back on the amp too covered in foam rubber ...
I really do wish there was a compromise to a 15" and less weight amp ... |

Wow $30
This vintage of BW 1203 is worth $100 bucks.
you should buy it, try it and if your not pleased,
you should be able make a profit selling it.
It also can used for guitar, keyboard, or monitor.
These BW 1203 are solid as a rock and almost impossible to blow. |

| 1203 is the 12 inch version of the 1501 and they are great speakers. I used them for a few years and really liked them. |

The 1201 and 1203 speakers have similar frequency responses however ...
the 1201 speakers were made with Kevlarâ„¢ impregnated cones which sound different and were intended primarily for sound reinforcement.
Kevlarâ„¢ has a unique sonic signature. |

The 1203 speakers also have Kevlar in the cones. If I recall correctly, none of the all-paper cone Black Widows are still in production.
I used to have a pair of 1203-8s and they have a different character than either the 1203-4 or the 1201-8. The difference on paper was subtle, but in the real world, it was night and day. |

yeah but which way?i have a 1201-8 that sounds fine.

The more current production run from Peavey do use Kevlarâ„¢.

However....
These are the 1990's vintage production run of the 1203 speakers and they don't have Kevlarâ„¢ cones....according to peavey's documents.

Comparing the 3 together side by side would be the only real way of comparing them in the same Steel-pickup to Preamp section to Poweramp.
The older vintage production all should sound good, but as in all Forum opinions, your mileage my vary.
The paper-cone 4 ohm 1203 has more high treble that needs to be rolled off.
the paper-cone 8 ohm 1203 is smoother in the high treble and these 2 'paper-cone versions' sound Hmmm ... similar. |

To my ears, the 1201-8 sounds the best, but it is obviously a personal preference. I sold my 1203-8 baskets to a steel player who wanted them. |
