| Just curious what people have used in the past. It seems like most people stick to whats now a pretty standardized E9/C6 set up and then personalize the copedent but I'm wondering if anyone does a truly different tuning. Didn't Mooney have something oddball on his front neck? |

| Red Rhodes had an Eb diatonic tuning on his second neck. It was just a major scale and the pedals altered it.Red told me you need 12 strings to make that tuning have enough range. Al Petty used something like that - also 12 strings. A few west coast guys use a 10 string A6 with pedals - the late Ernie Hagar for one. It's not just a C6 tuned down though. As I understand it,it's more like the A6 you get on E9 with the A&B pedals down. There's a little more to it than that but I'm not the guy to ask. Maybe Larry Petree can chime in. |

The tuning Ernie used, at least what he told me, is an E9 with strings 3-6 tuned as the pedals were pressed. That does put it in an A6 type tuning, but not similar to C6. Ernie told me that his setup was pretty much like Sonny Curtis used. That was a long time ago, so I'm relying on my aging memory.

That Ernie Hagar A6 tuning is basically E9 with the A and B pedals upside down. I began to wonder if it would make a basis for a universal tuning, but as I favour D on top of the C6 I concluded it wouldn't. Might suit some though.

Especially if someone is used to 8 string non-pedal A6. |

| I've seen reports of some that only play E9th putting E9th on the second neck. Then, if a string breaks just switch to the other neck and go on. |

My D6th works pretty well because it has the sound of a C6th, and one pedal change (middle F# to G) gives you the G Major open strings of a dobro for those classic bluegrass parts. Here it is as 8 string - just add a high E and low D for 10.
If you have an E9th, you don't need pedal 1 or LKV.

Jerry Byrd had a diatonic tuning and it seems with pedals you could do a lot with it but it also seems so open ended that it could get confusing fast. |

Not really, no. I have to work pretty hard to copy Sneaky Pete's licks on my 8 string, and on a D-10 it's easier to use the E9th for those parts.
