Jody Carver just sent me the lyrics to the song titled: The One Rose. I was just wondering if anyone else felt the same as I do about this song? I suppose everybody has a personal favorite and Danny Boy is also in
a conversation Jody and I are sharing but I told him I didn't need to hear the words to The One Rose because I had Jerry's music in my head for many, many years. Jody sent them
anyway because he already knew.

The lyrics simply make the melody flow and
take those beautiful bends and turns (Slants)
of Jerry's and give them a body to add to the soul he has created. I seem to be repeating myself! I said that back in 1963
as well I should have. 50 years and it's as
beautiful today as when he first played it.

Best Regards (Especially to Jerry), Paul

"The One Rose" is one of my all time favorites as played by Jerry Bryd. I have it on his "HI FI Guitar" album. Jerry did something on this rendition that is rarely done on a steel guitar recording.

After he played it one time through, he played the melody on his bass strings an octave below the first time through. I, to this day, can not get over the timber and beauty Jerry got during this recording playing these bass strings. That old 7 string Rick just puts goosepimples down my spine when I listen to this recording.

If my memory serves me correctly, he did this "bass" thing on at least one more tune on this album.

I am reminded of a modern day player who occassionally plays melody on bass strings and it is my dear friend Bill Stafford. His is a completley different flavor than Jerry's, but I love it when he does it.

I just wonder if this isn't an area that has been missed by many players, that could add yet another embellishment to this incredible instrument.

God bless Jerry Byrd, Bill Stafford and all of you,

carl

Jody: When I first started writing in the 60s
I had it in my head that pedals were a desperate attempt to play like Jerry. I know
better now because both have their place in
this musical world. I doubt if I could ever decide between one or the other, I love them both.

Carl: I knew Jody liked the Rose and I wanted
to know who you were. I was so sure there were others! You surely have a good ear as well to hear the character of his bass register. It is good on The One Rose but I've heard his version of Faded Love where he uses the bass register, again to perfection. He also used Patsy Cline's beautiful subtle fade out on the end as well.

I met Bill Stafford at the Steel Guitar Extravaganza in Atlanta two and a half years
ago. He and a dobro player he was with, forgot his name, took 20 minutes to write out the chords and lyrics to an old Wade Ray
song; "I Was Just Walking Out The Door." I know some would poke fun at the "Nice Guy/Steel Guitarist" phrase but if the shoe fits, wear it! It's just a reality of this instrument. They fit like hand in glove. Bill is one of many, many I have had the good fortune to meet. Good player/Good Person!

Good Songs; good music and good friends!
Who needs anything else? Regards Paul

OHHHH Paul my friend.

I never dreamed you were at the Steel Guitar Extravaganza show in Atlanta. You have NO idea how I have respected your writings from the earliest days of the old Fretts Magazine.

Wow, if I had only known you were at my show, I would have recognized your presence from the podium.

Man, why in this world did you not come up and introduce yourself? I still to this day read things you wrote eons ago. I am humbled and honored indeed you came to the show. And I would never ever produce a show without Bill Stafford being invited. Were we not fortunate that he accepted and graced our stage? Along with all the other incredible players and what a band HUH?

God bless you friend.

While all of you were busy at your thing, I was desperately attempting to find the spot on just one of a hundert or more audio cassettes that are not indexed.....in an attempt to provide a timely delivery of the words to One Rose. I have it with George Morgan on vocal and Jerry Byrd on steel. It's one you'd not likely forget. I think it's right in there with Danny Boy and Old Shep. Oh well.........

Of interest, the ONE ROSE was composed by Lani McIntire, (brother to Dick). It was recorded by many artists over the years, not the least of whom was Bing Crosby. Bill Stafford to the pedal guitar is what Jerry is to the non-pedal...he brings out the beauty in the pedal guitar while others are concentrating on flash, volume and a million (meaningless) notes. Often what Bill (and Jerry) do not play will tug at your heart!
Both are geniuses in their own field.. IMHO.

"he brings out the beauty in the pedal guitar while others are concentrating on flash, volume and a million (meaningless) notes"

George, truer words were NEVER spoken! Talkin about "meaningless notes", a dear friend of mine (a truly fantastic steel player), described it thusly:

"It reminds me of yound boy out in his backyard shooting a 22 rifle rapid fire in the air. He ain't hittin' nothing, he's just shootin!"

How many hours have I sat and listened to a zillion notes with dazzling footwork to boot on a steel guitar? Yes, how many times? And in many cases, NOT one note said a single musical word to my ears.

Only one man can do that continuosly and spell music to my ears. And of course he is the greatest steel player who ever lived.

But beyond that, give me the melody playing of Jerry Byrd or Lloyd Green or Bill Stafford, etc. ANY time.

But then we all like different things. So I suppose, there is room for all,

God bless you,

carl

Ray; George and Carl: Yes, Yes, Yes! This is what I knew and couldn't put into words. I really appreciate you guys backing up my thinking. The flowers are there but you have to slow down and as they say: Take the time to smell the roses. Jody: See what you have done! You got me started and these guys are all pros in their own rights. Especially that Imposter you exposed. bOb would kill me if I put all the smilies I'd like to on this post so I'll leave it at 3. Best Regards, Paul

Paul,,,glad you liked the "lyrics" to The One Rose,,,these comments are all on the money,,,all these fellows have superb taste&
I couldn't add to what has already been said.

Mr Stafford plays great,,,tasty,Mr Byrd ditto
cant debate anything,,,,Im glad the Red Rose is still flourishing,,,thanks to these people mentioned and ole Bing Crosby too,,,

Thanks fellows, you proved a point I tried to make in a post last week,,,you all said it better than I,,,,"less is more" and with feeling and "taste" it dont get tastier than Bill Stafford and Jerry Byrd....

Jody: Wait a minute. I need some help! I've got something stuck in the back of my head and I can't get it out. I think it may be a rose thorn. I've only got some bits and pieces of this one so you Da Man!

The song was titled: "Roses" and was by one of the Big Band groups but had a nice steel
guitar part in it. It could have been Alvino
Rey or it could even have been you. The only
lyrics I can recall went: Roses, I send you
roses...With all the love their-?-?-encloses.
I think the vocalist was Tony but no last name and too early for Bennett.

Got any ideas? To borrow (steal) a line from you: If it was Alvino Press 1
If it was you Press O for more help.
If you think I did it, call your Shrink
If you think Les Paul did it press 2222
2222222222222222 (Echoes!)
If you think Bobbe did it press SS for
the nearest Soc Sec office.
If you think Ray did it press 3 for MSNBC or Bill Gatesway (spelling doubtful?)
If you think it was Speedy press 4 for
any former Fender employees.

I'm just in from playing and I must have ran too many diminished chords because my brain
seems to reflect that less than normal functioning. Maybe some sleep would help.
I'll see you in my-.-.-.-! Regards, Paul

Here you are Jeff, compliments of Jody Carver

You're as sweet as the one rose in June, Dear
I love you, I love you, I do

Each night thru loveland we'd wander sweetheart.

Telling our love stories true

When out of the blue sky, a dark cloud came
rolling

Breaking my poor heart in two

Don't leave me all alone cause I love only
you

You're the one rose thats left in my heart.

Hope you like them. Regards, Paul

Eh, Paul.. 3rd line: "I love you, adore you, I do. " later..."sharing love's stories anew" no beeg deal. (ha!)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Also, as far as I can recall, the only "Rose" song which Alvino and the Big Band did was that great chart called "Roseroom". Alvino did a lovely pedal chorus on that tune. Anyone heard how he is doing these days ? He was ill a few months ago...hope this great gentleman is feeling better.

George: Thanks for the input and know that it is appreciated ! I don't know anything
about Alvino's current condition but I got a letter the other day from Honolulu, HI. Handwritten from Jerry Byrd ! I'm going to have to frame this one !!

He says that he gets letters, cards and things almost daily telling how much his music has meant to them and that they play his recordings all the time. I know I do !
He also wrote:

"I have been the luckiest guy who ever tried
and I know it !"

I couldn't add anything to that. He is "The
Master....." in other ways as well.

Best Regards, Paul

Speaking of "Roses", my favorite of Jerry's is "Valley of the Roses" on the Memories of Maria/Satin Strings album. Nice Spanish flair.

Wayne: There was a radio show on WSM years ago called Two Guitars; Chet Atkins and Jerry Byrd ! They played the Valley Of The
Roses one night and there were some others with that Spanish Flair that Jerry played. It may have been one of his favorite patterns
because he always included something of that nature on an album. Although it has nothing to do with Roses, I've always liked his rendition of Golden Earrings. Regards, Paul

If you want more of Jerry in the bass range get his latest CD "By Request" He does not use the bass register on this song but it will make you cry when he plays "I Fall To Pieces" All songs on this CD are fantastic. CC
