How were the Carter steel guitars? Not the starter, but the pro model D-10s? I'm looking at trading up for a 2005 Carter D-10. |

Great guitars. I owned four over the years and wish I still had at least one of them back. Great sustain, pedal and knee lever action along with staying in tune very well. They didn't have a lot of style being kind of plain looking in my opinion but they functioned well and that was very important to me.
The only pickup I would NOT recommend would be the E66 as it just didn't cut it in two different models I owned. I'd go with a XR16, 705,710 etc.
I would highly recommend getting one if its in good shape. _________________ Cops aren't paid much so I steel at night. |

Love mine. 2003 D-10. Gigged regularly. Sounds good. Not too heavy.

I've got two ordered from factory through Al Brisco. D10 curly maple double 10 and single 10 mica. Both real good looking guitars and stay in tune and are solid! Probably buy again if they were still in business...but there are some other great guitars now being built so there is no shortage of dream purchases. |

I can usually get 'my' sound out of a pedal steel guitar, but I struggled with a Carter SD 10 that I owned for a couple of years, it just didn't have it
Other Carters that I have played exhibited the same tone as mine, a very nasal, middly sound that I could not eradicate.
There is an unpleasant decay to the note which deteriorates into a 'mmmeeeeoooooouuuu', which I think is something to do with the changer design, plus the fact that the strings sit only 1 inch above the main body of the steel.
I have noticed that, on steels which are not the standard 1 1/2" string to body distance, but are nearer 1", the tone is compromised.
Obviously the reason for the 1" gap is to reduce cabinet drop.
Bear in mind that this is only my opinion, and some players actually seek out steels that, to me, have a very 'nasally' sound, as, to them, that is the epitome of pedal steel tone. |

Go for it....Great Guitars!! Mine was used when I got it, It was a universal as that's what I like. All I did was change to a Wallace TT pick/up as personally I prefer single coils....Seriously though anything The late Bud Carter built was good.

I agree many Carters out there aren't very eye-catching, but they were very well made and are still quite playable by many accounts.
I just couldn't resist this Custom Shop model when it came up for sale here a few years ago.
This 8X7 beauty has a pair of XR16s and a permanent spot in my home studio.
Plain? She gets some playin' each and every day!

I tried out a Carter double 10 I was interested in buying at a music store. It did not feel solid. I was not impressed. But that was just one guitar and probably needed a good setup and who can tell in the music store if you're going to like something _________________ A couple D-10s,some vintage guitars & amps, & lotsa junk in the gig bag. |

I love my Carter. I have never gotten any complaints about my sound being 'tinny' or 'middy'. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I'm thinking that any guitar designed by Bud Carter is going to be good--or any guitar designed by a Bud or Buddy for that matter. _________________ Those that say don't know; those that know don't say.--Buddy Emmons |

I will put my Carter up against any Emmons any day. I swap between my Emmons and my Carter and never have to touch my amp.
Tim Lusby on the Pam Tillis video has a Carter just like mine. They are killers with the Lawrence XR16 pickups. All the growl you could ever want.
The ONLY thing I don't like about the Carter is that when your plain strings begin to go dead, they get a screeching sound. Maybe that is a good thing to make you keep fresh strings on your steel. _________________ AUTHORIZED George L's, Goodrich, Telonics and Peavey Dealer: I have 2 steels and several amps. During the "Carter era," that company made not so subtle digs at other makers. Carters where supposed to be the next great thing. Unfortunately, some players found them to be a bit flimsy and not sounding as good as was expected.
Maybe there were a few duds, who knows, there are folks who obviously love the brand. But there is a reason that they sell for cheap. _________________ I need an Emmons!

The reason that they sell so cheap is that when John Fabian built these steels, he never goughed us on the selling price. You could buy a D10 new for under $3000 and the company was making money.
It was called, buy and make parts in bulk and have a system for building the steels. Bud Carter built one Pro model steel per day, almost every day.
So I don't think the selling prices today will rise too much, which is sad. These are great steels and are NOT flimsy.
People were asking for lighter weight steels and the Carter folks accomodated.
Yep, there were a few duds, just like in all the brands. I even had one, but they made it good.
I am proud to have been associated with John and Bud over the years. _________________ AUTHORIZED George L's, Goodrich, Telonics and Peavey Dealer: I have 2 steels and several amps.
