There are several manufacturers that use an extra rod for split tunning. I am interested in knowing the correcrt procedure for adjusting the "stop" for the G# to F# lever on the 6th string with a split. It also pulls the first F# up to a G. I have always played Zum's or Emmons guitars and this is new to me. Thank's

Hi, Morton, I would suggest putting a dab of colored marker on the end of the nylon tuner for the "extra" rod to keep track of it- then:

  • Tune to pitch with the tuning key
  • Tune rod from your G# to A pedal normally (to the raise position)
  • Tune the split note with the rod that pulls the G# to F#, while holding down the A note raise
  • Tune the final lowered note with the new "extra" rod.
Sounds weird on paper but you'll see how it works with the leverages.
The upper F# to G should have no effect on the split setup.

Adjust the stop with FULL Travel to the F# note. In other words, the string should reach F# at the same time you hit the stop.

John Fabian at Carter explains tuning pulls etc. well. Check it out http://www.steelguitar.com/support/videos/index.html

Mark's description is accurate on tuning the seperate rod for the split tuning. Carter guitars use this extra rod. I really like the feature myself. I als like the stop screw on all pull Emmons to accomplish the same task.

The raise (to A) stop is the same as before. Because the lower (to F#) will actually go lower than desired, the knee lever stop for the lower must be set for the split (G). Then the raise rod will be used bring it back up (to F#) when just the knee lever is activated.
