I ruined a 1501 speaker on a gig Friday night. The ohm selection switch on my Carvin BX 500 had got accidently pushed to the IN position, which is a speaker setting for a 2 ohm speaker. The speaker has lost a lot of volume and now just sounds real honky. I tried a Telonics speaker today, and it works perfectly, so it is definitely the 1501 speaker, not the amp.

I have another 1501 speaker that the cone has separated. I can unsolder the wires, remove the voice coil, and glue it back together. I have contact cement, silicone, and really strong construction adhesive. What is normally used to glue a cone together that has separated?

Would it be easier to just take the bad voice coil off the bad speaker and put the voice coil from the speaker with the separated cone on it? Assuming it is easy to do, this would be less work than gluing the cone back together and would probably be more reliable in the long run.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

it sounds like you might be referring to the dust cover in the center of the speaker rather than the voice coil which actually seats in the groove of the magnet. why don't you just put the other 1501 in and see how it works?

The dust cover is part of the "can" that the voice coil is formed on. A transplant sounds risky, but worth a try. The worst that can happen is it doesn't work and you have to buy another basket assembly. And you already either need one or two.

Chris, no use trying the other speaker. The whole cone is loose from the rest of the speaker. It should work fine if I just glue it back in place. Nothing is damaged at all, just parted ways, so to speak.

I am probably confusing everybody because of my lack of knowledge on electronic terminology. Here is what I am talking about: There are 3 large Allen Head bolts that are attached to the magnet. The hole spacing is the same in both speakers. Just looking at it, something should come loose if I take out the 3 bolts. I don't know if only the magnet will come loose or more stuff with it, or, if removing the magnet just gets access to the voice coil or something. I can try it on the bad speaker and see. It just looks to me like you could just take the bolts loose on the magnets of both speakers, then just switch them. Maybe not, but I don't have anything to loose on the bad speaker. I will pull it apart and see what happens and go from there.

Yes, when you remove the 3 large Allen Head bolts, the magnet lifts cleanly off. In fact, you can order a new basket/cone assembly and just bolt the old magnet onto it.

The three bolts hold the magnet onto what Peavey calls the "basket."
The basket includes the cone frame, the "can" (take it easy, that's just my term for it) that is both the dust cap AND the cylinder that the voice coil is wound around and the voice coil. If, on your bad speaker, the paper cone moves indepently from the can, then go ahead and try the transplant. Right now, you have two bad speakers. Worst case scenario: you'll STILL have two bad speakers, which is where you're at now. But you could end up with one good speaker

George, Tommy has 2 1501's for sale for $120.00 for both plus shipping. Perhaps you could buy one and I could buy one if he would sell separately.

Jerry, the way things have worked out, I am no longer interested in a 1501. I am getting a Telonics Cabinet but it will not be here for this weekend gigs. I was trying to get one of the 1501's going just for this weekend. After that, I would not have needed it.

BREAKING NEWS: I realized I have two speaker cabinets. They are called PA Floor Monitors. They have 15 inch speakers in them. I hooked one up and I can't believe it. It sounds great with my Carvin BX 500 amp. So I am all set (whew!) for this weekend, then after that, the Telonics will be following me around. I am now hoping that the Telonics will sound as good as the monitor.

You can close this down now.

That is great George. I bought a pair of Peavey 15" floor monitors last week and had an idea to try one with an old Kustom head I have. I might have to try it. I am glad you got the problem solved. I really don't want to buy any more speakers. Really, I have too many JBL's and not enough Black Widows. I have 3 Session 400's I need Black Widows for.
