My very first pedal steel was a brand new Fender 400 purchased in 1969...kinda wish I still had it for nostalgia sake. I am curious how many of you still own a Fender pedal steel, the 400, 800, 1000 or 2000, and would be willing to show us a picture. Something about those old steels that brings a smile to my face, and they had a sound all their own, imho. Thanks in advance !

These are great instruments. Every home should have at least one. Here's mine:

I play a 400 tuned to A6 and an 800 tuned to E9. I love the sound of these old beasts!

I played a 1000 for almost 8 years, and used it for touring, recording, and club gigs. I now have a 400, which I get a kick out of, and still play it once in awhile at my gigs. These old guitars aren't for everyone, but I really enjoy trying to get the "mostest from the leastest". Cool

I have one that I play on gigs with Bill Lyerly when he comes over from Spain for a month or so once a year. He wants the Moon sound. He tunes down a half step so that's just perfect to minimize the third string breakage.

Wow, great responses guys ! Thanks for all of the information. If I wind up getting one of these I will be asking questions about upkeep, etc. I am sure !! I had considered tuning down to a D9th...I had an old shobud that I tuned to an Eb9th for that very reason, and it drove me crazy...but like anything, I would have gotten used to it had I stuck with it long enough !

Bob,
Your blue 400 really grabbed my attention. My first pedal steel was a blue 800. When they're shined up, they are beautiful guitars. Bought mine new in '66 and played it until the early '80 when it was destroyed in a flood.

Would love to sit down to one again.

Thanks for posting Bob.

Craig,
Glad you enjoyed it. If you ever find yourself about to visit Wilmington, NC, hit me up and we'll arrange for you to sit down at a blue 400 (or a sunburst 800) again! Smile

Two of them, both highly modified (8+2, B6, added electronics, height raised, dual pickups) - one for home use only...it's a tad fragile...and the other to play out. I went through many pedal steels before finally finding the one that felt like "home"!

I have a 1000, 10 pedals, trying the factory A6 and E13 tuning. With a Bassman it's killer!
